A flying tank and a bicycle with a machine gun: 5 most non-trivial examples of military equipment

Throughout the history of mankind, weapons have been repeatedly improved, and completely new ones have been developed. And quite often ideas that were absolutely amazing in their non-triviality were taken as the basis for the concept of the next model of military equipment. And if some are a real breakthrough in the history of military affairs, then others could leave their mark there except perhaps due to oddities in the design or principle of operation. Your attention to the 5 most non-trivial samples of military equipment.

1. Armored ATV

England is rightfully considered the birthplace of the first truly effective tanks. However, before that, at least one strange idea had appeared, only vaguely resembling an armored car in the form in which we are used to presenting it. We are talking about a model of an armored ATV. In fact, the car was a four-wheeled bicycle, on which a 2 hp engine was installed. And all the weapons consisted only of a machine gun mounted on the steering wheel. With all the innovation of the idea at that time, the low speed, poor security and insufficient maneuverability of the prototype did not allow the project to move beyond the testing stage.

Five hundred years ago, powerful artillery cannons and guns were actively used by the armies of the world. Therefore, there is nothing surprising in the fact that this type of technology has non-trivial projects in its history. A striking example of such a development is the concept of a circular cannon, where eight gun barrels were mounted on a stand that rotated. It was assumed that there were two firing modes: one after the other from the guns in turn, or in a volley from all the barrels at once. However, with unprecedented power for that era, the unit turned out to be too massive, difficult to manufacture and time-consuming to maintain, and it took a long time to recharge, so the project was abandoned. And although after that similar concepts repeatedly appeared, they also did not gain popularity.

3. Vomit gun

Some time ago, it was decided to rearm the American police to fight aggressive rioters and other troublemakers. Among the potential elements of their equipment was almost a strange-looking pistol with at least non-standard application: emitting a special pulsating light, it was designed to cause nausea in a person and vomiting. However, such measures seemed too inhumane to the American law enforcement agencies, but this strange gadget has survived in history.

This development is a typical example of an attempt to bring to life a strange-looking project during World War II. We are talking about the concept of British engineers - a hybrid of an armored vehicle and an aircraft called the Hafner Rotabuggy. It was planned to be used for raids deep behind enemy lines: the car was supposed to literally fall from heaven. This unusual unit was to be controlled by two crew members, one of whom was a helicopter pilot, and the other was a car driver. However, the tests turned out to be a failure - the car was unable to accelerate steadily and climb high. Therefore, this project was closed in 1944.

5. "Flying tank" A-40

In the Soviet Union, they tried to create their own hybrid of two types of military equipment. Only in this case did they decide to combine the glider and the tank. This unusual machine was supposed to be used as support for partisan detachments, being delivered to hard-to-reach areas in order to unexpectedly attack the enemy in the rear. But the outcome of this concept was similar to what happened with Rotabuggy: the device took off too low, and after that his engines completely overheated, so the test flight ended in an emergency landing. After that, no one began to continue development, and the project was closed.
