The cultivation of unusual berry crops on the site is increasingly becoming a favorite pastime of most summer residents. However, caring for many of them has its own specific nuances and features. How to grow blueberries in the country in the open field, I will tell you in detail in this article.
Where is the best place to plant blueberries?
In order to get a good harvest of berries, it is important to initially choose the right place for planting blueberries. This culture prefers acidic but fertile soils, as well as sunny and well-protected places from drafts and wind. With a lack of heat, the plant develops poorly, blooms little, and its fruits are small or do not ripen at all. Therefore, the ideal option for planting blueberries is the southern side of the site, unshaded by tall trees. Often, people try to grow blueberry bushes on alpine hills, thereby increasing its yield and decorating their garden at the same time.
When and how to plant blueberries?
Planting blueberries can be done twice a year. Namely:
- autumn
- spring
The easiest way to plant a berry in open ground is in the spring, when it is easier for plants to take root in a new place. This procedure is done in mid-April - early May before the first buds appear on the branches. For young shrubs, a small hole is dug 30-40 cm deep, and thoroughly watered with warm water. Blueberries are put there along with a clod from the ground, buried, and then well covered with a spandbod in case of May frosts.
When planting in autumn, the size of the hole for blueberries should be slightly larger - about 40-50 cm deep. At the same time, before planting, old branches are cut off near the bush, and the soil is prepared for mulching and watering. After all the work, the root part of the culture is covered for the winter, using sawdust, spruce branches and burlap for this purpose.
How to care for blueberries?
Blueberries are a fairly unpretentious berry crop, so caring for them is as simple as possible. However, throughout the growing season, plants need good watering, and competent top dressing to form juicy, ripe fruits. Fertilize blueberries in three stages:
- immediately after landing
- during budding
- during the fruiting period
To feed it, experts advise using only inorganic fertilizers to avoid alkalization of the soil. Also, with insufficient pH in the area, gardeners recommend adding a little ammonium sulfate to the soil.
