The main difference is in the type of insulation

In the modern world, conductors that conduct electricity are only copper. They are made either solid or multi-wire. Sometimes aluminum is also used, but we do not take it into account, since it is suitable for outdoor wiring and narrowly focused tasks.

To figure out which type of wire is used for what, you need to be able to distinguish between an insulating layer and a regular sheath.

Any core must be insulated. For ordinary wires, the insulating layer is made of PVC. Heat-resistant rubber is also used for insulation, but this is only for special wires that are not suitable for domestic needs (KG cable).

The next layer that protects the core is called the sheath or the second insulation. When the core is hidden in two layers, you are dealing with a cable. There are the following brands of cables: VVG and NYM. Since they are reliable, they are suitable for concealed laying.

The difference between cables and wires

External protection of cords and wires is a sheath that protects the conductors only from mechanical influences. Therefore, they can only be laid openly. To protect yourself and everyone around you, the shell of the products must be regularly inspected and checked so that it is not damaged.

So we got to the comparison of wire and cord. For clarity, let's take the PVA wire and the ShVVP cord. What are their differences? In simple terms, there are almost no differences. It’s just that in the abbreviation SHVVP its direct purpose is encrypted - “a cord for low-power household appliances”.
