Why German Stuka bombers made such a roar during a dive

The German Junkers-87 dive bomber, or simply the soldier's "Stuka", is perhaps the most famous Luftwaffe aircraft of the Second World War. He was remembered in world history at least by the fact that he knew how to make an extremely specific roar when making a dive. Where did this maddening sound come from?

What they just didn’t come up with around the legendary Junkers-87 dive bomber, penetrating to the very core. And the fact that the planes are allegedly equipped with a special electronic siren. And the fact that it was done for psychological pressure on opponents. And the fact that the idea was given to the designers by almost the “darkest” of the Third Reich in the person of Adolf Hitler. In fact, all these fairy tales have nothing to do with reality.

As is often the case in life, everything is much simpler, but it is never less interesting. Noisy in "Stukas" when diving is really a siren, but not electric, but mechanical. If you look through a lot of photos, you will notice that some Ju 87s have some strange tiny propellers on the chassis. Actually, this is the same siren that emits a terrible scream when diving.

Siren propellers were needed to increase the survival rate of pilots. Even before the outbreak of World War II, Germany understood the limitations of its resources, and therefore went along ways of designing equipment that would allow it to minimize losses among experienced crews. The siren was supposed to help the pilots better understand when diving, at what speed the "Thing" is. The louder the siren's roar, the closer the earth. This function seemed especially useful on the part of the command and designers for young pilots.

Moreover, on the first Junkers-87 models there was no mechanical siren. Even during the Spanish Civil War, the Nazis fought without her. It appeared just before the Second World War. At the same time, the siren not only frightened everyone on the ground and gave out the "Thing" according to the branded part, but also terribly infuriated the pilots themselves - the increasing noise most often did not help, but distracted. Therefore, many experienced pilots asked mechanics to simply remove the propellers from the sirens so that they would not roar under their ears.
