Today, PVC pipes are used with might and main in domestic sewage. After changing the sewer pipes in the house, I still have a lot of dissimilar plastic scraps that I due to excessive frugality, I simply could not throw it away, hoping to use them in some way in further.
However, the use of such materials without their connection is very limited (except perhaps in the ground instead of pegs), so I had to rack my brains over how to get a full-fledged pipe from several scraps without additional investment in the appropriate equipment - couplings and tools. And I did it, which I will talk about in this article.
The method I used is simple. It is quite fast and does not require any special knowledge and skills to use it. The procedure for connecting PVC pipes is as follows:
- 1. It is necessary to decide on which of the pieces to be joined the socket will be located and make chamfers on it inside. On the other pipe, they should be outside. Chamfers are needed for ease of operation.
- 2. The piece of pipe on which the socket will be is subject to heating. In theory, a building hair dryer is used for heating, but in our case we do not use any equipment. We will heat with ordinary boiling water.
Pour water into a saucepan (or any other container) and boil it. We place a piece of pipe in boiling water to a depth of a little more than five centimeters.
After 2-3 minutes, remove the pipe from boiling water, grab another pipe (with external chamfers) and insert it with force into the heated product. With some effort, we successfully connect these two pieces.
During my experiments with pipes and boiling water, I was afraid that the pipe would not be able to warm up to the desired temperature. However, despite the fact that the boiling point of water does not exceed one hundred degrees, the socket formed normally and the pipes connected perfectly with the necessary strength.
It is clear that a building hair dryer would have made the heating faster and the connection would be more durable, but the boiling water temperature was quite enough.
After connecting the pieces of pipes, it is necessary to wait for them to cool completely. After that, to secure the connection, I treat the joint with silicone sealant. Practice has shown that this operation can be omitted, since the strength of the pipe will be quite reliable.
- Important: in case the pipe is needed to perform responsible work, it is not advisable to use the product assembled in this way (using boiling water)! A whole pipe will have to work here or a standard coupling will be used. But, for example, for a basement hood, such a product is quite suitable.
