The company has managed to establish itself with high-quality budget devices that differ from competitors in quite high characteristics at more than the appropriate price category.

Appearance

cubot_p20_review-16

Perhaps the main feature of the Cubot P20 is the steep gradient of the rear panel. It looks catchy, impressive, interesting. Especially in the overall rigor of the apparatus.

Otherwise, this is a familiar “frameless” smartphone from mid-2018, most similar to the iPhone X. On the other hand, if people like it, why not? Moreover, for 130 dollars.

Some may feel that the frames around the screen are too thick. Perhaps the notch is larger than it should be - it's larger than the notorious iPhone. But there are no beveled corners, complex shapes or attempts to improve the simplest smartphone in appearance.

The arrangement of the elements is standard: on the right is a volume rocker and a power button, on the left is a slot for 2 SIM cards with the ability to install a microSD of up to 128 GB instead of one of them.

A microUSB connector is hidden at the bottom end. The mini-jack has not disappeared anywhere; it is still located on the top edge.cubot_p20_review-08 The fingerprint scanner is located on the back of the smartphone. It works like a clock, by the way, much faster than many branded flagships.

Display

cubot_p20_review-02

I love Cubot smartphones for their use of IPS displays made by Sharp. This time the company did not change tradition, equipping the P20 with an excellent 6.18-inch screen. In total, the gadget fits into the standard dimensions of a 5.5-inch smartphone.

The resolution corresponds to the dimensions - 2246 x 1080 pixels, thanks to which the gadget perfectly displays any content. From any angle and any lighting. The brightness is sufficient, the contrast is excellent, the color gamut matches reality as closely as possible.

Since there is an MTK processor hidden under the hood, you can change the color temperature in the settings.

Hardware configuration

And again - yes, inside the budget Cubot P20 there is an equally budget 8-core MTK MT6750T processor. It is supported by 4GB of RAM and 64GB eMMC storage.

Not the best components that get along well with Android 8. The smartphone does not break records in Antutu or Geekbench, but the performance is sufficient for any tasks assigned to budget smartphones.

Why, you can even play PUBG, although loading locations will not be fast, and for intense scenes you will have to reduce the quality of the graphics.

What saves you is the absence of any additions to the system: pure Android “boosts” the insufficient hardware.

Multimedia capabilities

cubot_p20_review-17

The multimedia capabilities of the Cubot P20 are even surprising: the main camera contains 2 sensors, 20 and 2 megapixels. The second sensor is used for color correction of the image, allowing the gadget to obtain excellent, rich frames that do not correspond to the budget level.

Problems begin when there is insufficient lighting. Even HDR doesn't help much in the dark: the camera lacks a fast lens and the f/2.0 aperture is too small. Therefore, the Cubot P20 shoots grainy and faded.

The front camera has a 13-megapixel sensor without autofocus and flash. However, it’s enough to make something “for yourself” for a social network. No more is needed.

Autonomous operation

cubot_p20_review-07

The built-in 4000 mAh non-removable battery for the energy-efficient MTK processor is sufficient for a couple of days of very active use. If we consider individual scenarios, we get the following figures:

  • Wi-Fi surfing – 14 hours,
  • surfing 4G – 12 hours,
  • 3D games – 6 hours,
  • watching movies in native resolution from internal memory – 10 hours,
  • Screen operating time with 4G turned on is 8 hours.

Not bad numbers for a cheap smartphone. In a real situation, without much savings, this will be enough for 2 days, and if you disable unnecessary functions, for 3-4 days.

conclusions

cubot_p20_review-20

Despite the blatant copying, the Cubot P20 has become a very interesting smartphone. It offers a lot more than the standard $120-$130 Xiaomi, has great looks and, By the way, it works incredibly well in all networks - both in the Russian 4G bands and with GPS/GLONASS/Beidou.

In addition, Cubot does a good job of developing its smartphones - we can confidently say about the P20 that it will last for a couple of years. Made reliably.

Impressive autonomy adds points to this device. An excellent working machine that has no analogues for its 130 dollars.
