Every year, on April 18, the whole world celebrates the unofficial World Amateur Radio Day. In 2017, the holiday will be held for the 92nd time.
In the USSR, this day was not officially celebrated. But on October 18, 1992, the Russian Amateur Radio Union was created, which already in 1994 became a member of the International Amateur Radio Union. Now the international holiday has officially become an all-Russian holiday.
Once upon a time, this day was held to unite radio communication enthusiasts - radio amateurs from all countries, to connect cities and the continent. Then they were joined by the organizers of clubs, pirate radio stations (which gave the world rock and roll and hip-hop) and ordinary geeks.
With the advent of universal access to the Internet, the relevance of radio communications has decreased. But many amateur stations continue to broadcast today.
Meanwhile, modern methods of communication are based on the same principles as 100 years ago. Each of us uses dozens of wireless communication nodes on various frequencies every day. Even if you've never seen analog radio, you probably use streaming broadcasts on the Internet. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are also types of radio communications. So every owner of an open wireless Internet access point can become a follower of the pirates of the 60s of the last century, who brought knowledge, fun and favorite music.
