The filling is typical for Chinese flagships this fall - Snapdragon 821 and a version with 4 and 6 GB (we have already seen this in Mi 5S and 5S Plus, as well as in Le Eco Le Pro 3), a large battery, support for USB Type C. It’s a pity that the camera let us down - to be honest, in a smartphone at this price you expect modules from Sony, and OmnyVision has established itself as a supplier of fairly budget solutions.

Packaging and kit

Typically, this year's Xiaomi flagships come in a white cardboard box of fairly modest size. This time the box is sophisticated, three-sectional. I have never seen anything like this from a company before. But considering how much she has released over the past year, this is not surprising.

The delivery set is quite ordinary - in addition to the charging and synchronization cable and powerful 12V 1.5A charging, the kit includes only an additional case to protect the back cover.

Appearance, connectors, ergonomics

The smartphone certainly looks very impressive - thin frames that almost turn into side rounded edges, a huge screen with a resolution of 1080x2040 pixels (additional pixels are needed in order to display this menu, located below).

Thanks to the Sharp matrix, everything on the screen looks really great, and the 6.4-inch diagonal is just right is better suited for this resolution (although there are maniacs who believe that a smartphone definitely needs 4k). Here are some photos to evaluate the viewing angles.

The back cover also looks great when you first take it out of the box. Of course, if no one got it before you.

However, as soon as you start using the smartphone, all this glossy ceramic on the back cover begins to look rather unsightly - fingerprints on it would please any forensic scientist. It's no surprise that Xiaomi includes a case in the box. True, with it the smartphone looks, in my opinion, quite collective farm.

The location of the controls is traditional. On the right is a volume rocker and an on/off button.

At the bottom are the speakers and USB Type C connector.

On the left there was only room for a slot for two SIM cards.

As you can see, microSD is not supported - however, given how much built-in flash storage this smartphone has, this may not be necessary.

At the top you can see the headset jack, as well as active noise-canceling microphones.

The most interesting thing is in the front. As you can see, the screen occupies almost the entire surface of the front side, so that there is no room on top for the front camera and speaker.

The first one moved down, and this is really unusual. In order to take a selfie, it is better to turn your smartphone upside down, otherwise the picture will be very, very strange. By the way, the quality of frontal shooting is normal, that is, nothing special.

Since there is no room left for the loudspeaker, the smartphone screen vibrates during a call. This is very unusual - the sound is certainly loud and quite clear, but, in my opinion, it is overly artificial. Maybe, of course, it's just unusual.

Performance testing

There was no time to conduct full testing, however, everything is clear with performance. Despite the fact that there is a top-end 821 Qualcomm Snapdragon, Xiaomi traditionally clamps down on its frequency, as a result, the scores in the antutu are not amazing - there are “only” 100 thousand of them.

And although I tried to achieve great results using all possible tricks, nothing changed. However, in fact, this is more than enough to not experience problems with the device’s brakes for several more years.

Photo

The smartphone uses a 16 megapixel camera, with a 1/3.06” OmniVision OV16880 sensor with a pixel size of 1 micron, support for PDAF focusing and video recording in 4K format. This is far from a flagship solution, and the photographs taken by the smartphone confirm this.

Battery life, charging

Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough time to fully test the battery life. However, in the 4 hours that I spent actively working with the smartphone, it only lost about 25% of its charge. This suggests that the device will last more than one working day.

Charging correctly supports Quick Charge - when charging was connected, the simplest USB tester showed a current of 1.3A at 12V. At this rate, it will be possible to charge a smartphone in two and a half hours

Links to a text review with photos will be at the bottom of this video, maybe right away, maybe a little later. In my opinion, the photos in Xiaomi Mi5S are much better.

Also here we see a fingerprint sensor, which tells us that this is a flagship model, with 6 GB of RAM and 256 GB of built-in flash storage. The fingerprint sensor works like a bullet, there are no comments about it.

General Operation

In my opinion, due to its large size, using a smartphone is not very convenient. Yes, of course, thanks to the narrow frames (one cannot say that they are not there, they are still there!), the smartphone the dimensions are rather similar to 6″ smartphones, but still, using the device with one hand is practically possible impossible.

The strange sound of the speech speaker is not very annoying, you gradually get used to it.

Turning your smartphone over to take a selfie is a strange thing to do. If you don’t turn it over, you have to lift it too high, people turn around on the street.

Total

It was clear in advance that this smartphone was a technology demo. In principle, the smartphone itself turned out to be very interesting; the only controversial point (well, apart from the form factor with minimal bezels, this is already a feature) is the strange camera module. Well, the option with a black bright shiny ceramic coating that gets dirty - this is clearly not for me, I’m not that neat.

The cost of a technology demo is quite high, but compared to the flagships of “big” manufacturers, of course, this is not surprising. Xiaomi hit the track and started doing something special. So far it's at least interesting.
