In just a few and not very productive years in their blood six acres I firmly grasped that any garden - is a growing, blooming, flies, crawls and chirping ecosystem. All the elements of which are, if not in direct, in indirect relationship with each other. But sometimes attempts to influence the system turn very suddenly.

For example, in the last season, I finally tried on their own soil mulching beds technology, for which he paid dearly part of the harvest. Came running out of nowhere and bred in the mulch slugs, appreciated my tomatoes, cabbage and new varieties of strawberries. This season I was determined to give these types of slippery resistance, and this is what came out of it ...

Slugs and mulch

For a start, I realized that wet conditions "mulch" soil - ideal habitat for pests such as garden slugs. However, to give up the mulch I did not dare. Too intense heat often stands in our area. Therefore, leaving the soil unprotected from aggressive heavenly body - like death.

Later, through trial and error, after a few sleepless nights for the thematic forums and literature I have identified three of the most effective and simplest type of mulch. On them will be discussed below.

№1. Sand

What could be easier than to get a couple of bags of sand and gently "wake up" between the beds of a flat "mesh" of it? If the "mound" is quite high, and the slug has not grown to the size of a small fee, he did not dare to overcome this obstacle.

№2. Hay and straw

Small sharp objects slugs are not too fond of. Therefore, any "sharp" for their excellent mulch amiss.

Litter". in fact, it proved to be slightly less effective in my experiments. However, perhaps the reason for it was the fact that straw, I shielded delicacy for slugs tomatoes and sandy parapets surrounded only potato bushes.

№3 Ash

If the fight goes to the slugs are not in your favor - do not sprinkle ashes on his head. Better thereby ash mulch beds. Wood ash has proved to be an excellent tool in the fight against slippery pests. You can also combine it with a mulch of pine needles or egg shell.

It is worth noting that while the effectiveness of the methods described above, with the slugs in the war, I did not hesitate in choosing the auxiliary "weapons". They were, and "beer" traps, and hot pepper powder.

By the way, I love him slippery guys simply can not stand. But that's another story. And it I have also somehow necessarily tell.
