I managed to get rid of couch grass in the garden: a personal experience

  • Dec 27, 2019

As it turned out, the majority of readers interested in is a personal experience, rather than general advice and horticultural theory. I am very glad. I try to remember as many of their experiments, successes and failures as possible. Unfortunately, most of what I am describing happened many years ago, so the process photos, but I do not, I'll try to describe everything in great detail.

One of the major problems that I once managed to cope, was a couch. This king weed bothered me for quite a long time.

My attempts to cope with wheatgrass

At first I just dug up areas overgrown with couch grass in a bayonet spade. This gave a temporary effect. And no wonder. Wheatgrass root system goes deep into the ground. Got accustomed to destroy the weed simple digging will not work. This plant is able to rise even from small root residues.

Later, I began to add to the mulching of digging. Dense layer tucked hay to the tilled soil. The result is a better, but still managed to grow wheatgrass and start all over again. At this point I did not stop and continued to perfect his method.

At that time I did not use in his plot no herbicides. They nebyli popular and get a good remedy was difficult. However, I did not even try to do so.

I replaced the usual digging deep (Of which I will discuss below), Leaving the mulching with hay. The result was not long in coming. I already thought that I could win wheatgrass, but some spring sprouts still managed to get out of the soil. This meant that the root system is still alive and weed recover in a matter of months.

How I managed to win wheatgrass

Since I have almost managed to cope the weed, I decided not to give up and replace the hay on the black tape. At that time, she just began to acquire its popularity. That film put an end to the fight against couch grass. I'll tell more.

My way was very time consuming, but effective.

First we need to cut the long stalks of wheat grass ordinary sickle, gathering together and sent for incineration. The place where the weed grows, you need to dig to a depth of two bayonet spades. For this purpose there is a special technology:

  • The first groove is dug deep into two bayonet spade. All soil deposited on the oilcloth, in the garden wheelbarrow or other container. Importantly, do not throw on the site;
  • Near the other digs a groove depth in a bayonet spade. A layer of sod with a second groove on the bottom is sent first upside .;
  • Turf layer in the first groove is dug from the ground of the second groove. So that the first groove has been completely buried, and the other remained deep in two bayonet shovels;
  • Further swarm third groove and the whole process repeated;
  • At last, we bury the groove ground of the first, the one that was postponed earlier.

All the roots that we encounter during the digging, just go into the fire. If you adjust, you can dig fairly quickly.

The resulting field is not necessary to close the black light-transmitting film. Desirably, the film was folded in two layers. (Sometimes sold "sleeves", and so they are perfectly suited for the job). We reserve film prior to the start of next season.

After this procedure, wheatgrass will no longer grow. (Perhaps out of respect for the work done :))
