I think that I was not the only one who noticed that builders often cut profiled sheets or metal tiles using an ordinary grinder, installing a disc for metal on it. Until recently, it seemed to me quite logical and normal.
However, the other day I talked to an experienced builder who "opened my eyes" to the truth. It turns out that the grinder is not suitable for cutting profiled sheets. Now I am ready to carry this truth to the masses!
- 1. When cutting a profiled sheet with a grinder, the anti-corrosion layer, which is covered with metal, suffers. Because of this, rust will quickly appear on the sheet, which will significantly reduce its service life.
- 2. In addition, today many sheets are coated with a polymer layer that can melt from sparks generated when cutting with a grinder. This negatively affects the appearance.
I hope I was able to convey an important message to you! A reasonable question arises: how to cut the profiled sheets?
1. All the same builder told me that the ideal option for cutting profiled sheet is special hacksaw for metal works. It allows you to make an even edge, without waves and burrs. True, it will not work for curved cutting.
2. In this case, I advise you to arm yourself jigsaw (manual or electric - decide for yourself). Although the cutting time will increase, the protective layer will not suffer. As a result, the professional flooring will serve you for many years!
3. When straight edges are not important, they can go electric scissors. With their help, you can quickly cut the profiled sheets, with a minimum of effort.
- For professional sheets, the best option is slotted scissors. This tool is rightfully called universal, because after it there is an even edge, it does not deform the material.
- Nibbling shears allow cutting metal along parallel straight lines, i.e. no need to bend the sheet. If there are sharp turns in the cut, it is best to opt for a nibbler.
4. Also a common option is drill bits, allowing to cut corrugated board. True, not everyone can work with them, experience is needed here. Basically, such attachments are used on cordless drills or screwdrivers, in places that are difficult to cut.
How to avoid rust on the edges
Whatever tool you use, no one is insured against corrosion at the cut site. To prevent the metal from oxidizing, the cut should be treated with a protective mastic or covered with a special compound of a suitable color. Thanks to this, the professional sheets will serve you much longer.
