"Polypropylene makes a bad heating system!" Was the installer right?

The modern range of materials for the installation of heating systems is very extensive and varied. If you remember the old days, then before they used exclusively metal, since it was simply unrealistic to find other materials.

In those years, stainless steel was valued most of all. After some time, metal-plastic appeared. The material turned out to be cheaper and easier to use. It does not lose its relevance today. For example, warm floors are made from metal-plastic.

In my house, the floor heating system is also made of this material. However, this did not quite suit me. The fact is that at high temperatures the metal-plastic expands and begins to leak. Previously, I used a frost-resistant coolant that has increased fluidity.

I decided to replace metal-plastic with polypropylene. Currently, the heating system in my entire house is made of it.

I thought it would be better this way. First of all, polypropylene is convenient and easy to install, no special equipment is needed.

Secondly, knowledge for the installation of such a heating system is required minimal. Everyone can do this job.

However, I heard from one experienced installer that it is undesirable to make heating systems from polypropylene. In order to convince me of his words, he cited the following facts:

  • 1. In the process of installing polypropylene, you need to be as careful as possible. I note that some workers simply do not want to try, and therefore squeeze the material when docking.
  • 2. Polypropylene is characterized by increased linear expansion, so it performs its functions only in heating systems with low temperatures (up to 75 degrees). If the temperature readings exceed these values, the material will become brittle. As a result, leaks are possible.
  • 3. A significant disadvantage of polypropylene is couplings with metal threads. As the material softens at elevated temperatures, threaded connections can leak.

All this means that before starting work with polypropylene, you need to create a project. If you decide to install a similar heating system in your apartment, first coordinate the work with your neighbors on the entrance.

I will say that I rarely warm up the batteries and underfloor heating in the house above 65 degrees. Therefore, I hope that I will not face the above problems. But still, I will always be on the alert and monitor the heating system.
