There is an opinion that well water is the cleanest and healthiest. In some cases, this statement really takes place. But in some situations, the water in wells and wells is so contaminated that it is undesirable to cook food from it, and even more so - to use it in its pure form.

Today I want to tell you a few elementary ways that will help determine how high-quality the water is in the well. Please note that we are not talking about any special devices that cost a lot of money. Everything is trite, intuitive and practically free!

Nobody has canceled the human taste buds. After all, even by the taste, you can understand whether the water in the well is clean, whether it is tasty and suitable for drinking. Purely visually, a person is able to appreciate the transparency of water, its smell and, naturally, taste. If you need a deeper and more accurate analysis, like determining acidity, chemical analysis will come to the rescue.

Organoleptic method

1. Stage 1 - The smell of water

Although it sounds trite, but first of all, you need to sniff the water, and in several stages.

Heat well water slightly (no more than 25 degrees). Appreciate her scent. Then heat a little more (up to 50 degrees). Reassess the smell.

If you do not feel any stench, then the water in your well is quite clean and suitable for drinking. Otherwise, you need to understand what led to the unpleasant odor:

  • The scent of delight - a clear sign of the presence of hydrogen sulfide in water. In this case, the water is not drinkable. Its use can lead to poor health.
  • Smell of petroleum products indicates the presence of decomposition products in water.
  • If the water "gives off" with bleachdon't even try to try it. At best, you are threatened with poisoning, at worst - digestive disruption.
  • Putrid smell talks about organic water pollution.

2. The second step is to determine the color of the water

Sniffed, you can look at, or rather, evaluate the transparency of the water.

Only when the liquid is absolutely transparent, we can talk about its purity. If the water has some kind of shade, then it contains harmful elements. I advise you to use glass containers to understand how clear the water is.

3. The third stage is the taste of well water

Only if you are convinced of the transparency of the water and the absence of unpleasant odors, you can proceed to tasting it. If at least one of the above points makes you suspicious, I do not advise you to try the water so as not to harm your health.

  • A sweet taste indicates an excessive amount of gypsum in the water, and a bitter taste indicates the presence of magnesium sulfate.
  • If the water is salty, it is obvious that it contains a lot of salt.
  • The taste of copper appears when the iron content is exceeded.
  • A putrid taste indicates organic contamination.

Determine the hardness of water with improvised means

Water is considered hard if its content of magnesium and lime is exceeded. It's easy to check.

  • 1. You can resort to using detergents. They won't foam in hard water.
  • 2. Assess the condition of the cranes. With an increased level of hardness, deposits appear on them

How our grandmothers checked water quality

  • 1. You need to take a transparent container and draw water from a well into it. Place the container in a dark place (basement, cellar, closet, etc.). After a few days, see what happened to the water. If flowering has appeared, I strongly do not recommend using such water.
  • 2. See if water leaves marks on clean surfaces. If so, there are many different impurities in it.
  • 3. Take a bar of soap and grind it up. Try making a soapy solution. If the pieces settle to the bottom, the water is not of the highest quality. But in clean water, the soap will dissolve completely.
  • 4. Heat the water, boil for about 10 minutes, then cool and pour out of the kettle. See what scale has formed. If it is dark, the water is rich in iron oxide, if it is yellow, it is rich in calcium.
  • 5. Dissolve a small amount of potassium permanganate in water. If the solution turns out to be pink, there are no complaints about the quality of the water. But the yellow color of the solution should alert you.
