The topic of my article today, I decided to choose HDPE pipes. I have heard more than once that such pipes can withstand frost and do not burst. Is it true? First, you need to figure out what the HDPE is.

It - very dense low pressure polyethylene (it is 0.950-0.970). HDPE pipes look the same as LDPE (high pressure polyethylene) pipes. It is almost impossible to distinguish them with the naked eye. Therefore, you need to look at the labeling of the product or look at its passport.

HDPE pipes are distinguished by their high hardness, they hardly leave any mechanical damage, for example, scratches. Try to walk along the surface of the pipe with a sharp object. Make sure for yourself that the surface of the product will not suffer from this.

But our goal is to understand whether they can withstand the severe frost. I don’t think it’s necessary to say that the volume of a liquid increases when it freezes. This is the basics of physics that we are taught at school. As a result, the pressure experienced by the pipes increases several times. For any material, the general rule applies: thin pipes withstand frost better, more resistant to freezing of liquid.

HDPE pipes are able to withstand severe frosts. The main thing is to take into account what materials the joints and couplings are made of. If these elements cannot withstand the cold weather, fail even with a minimal drop in temperature, then the meaning of HDPE pipes is lost.

Low pressure polyethylene is able to withstand temperatures down to -15 degrees. The pipes will only freeze if the liquid that has turned into ice stays in them for too long. The material will expand significantly but will not burst. When the water thaws, the pipes will return to their original form. It can be concluded that HDPE pipes are very reliable and durable.

If you are going to lay such pipes, try to do it as deep as possible. In case of freezing of the ground, do not be discouraged. Loosening of the earth can save. When laying pipes, you can use fire tools or electrodes.

In the end, I want to say: HDPE pipes withstand sub-zero temperatures perfectly. In regions where severe frosts are observed, they are simply irreplaceable. Just remember about the hardware, which can cause a lot of trouble if it is made of materials that are not resistant to freezing.
