How to cut a sewer pipe into a drain pit.

  • Dec 10, 2020

To people who are not familiar with the technology of cutting pipes into the sewer, this process may seem elementary. In fact, it is very difficult to perform this manipulation. If you make a number of typical mistakes, serious problems cannot be avoided. Or maybe you even have to do everything in a new way.

The most common mistake is incorrect entry of the pipe into the sewer pit. The pipe must be installed so that it is at least 20 centimeters from the ring surface. If this condition is not met, the concrete ring can be severely damaged. In addition, if the pipe is inserted into the pit less than 15 centimeters, blockages will regularly form.

What is required for tapping into a drain pit

My sewer pit is made of concrete rings. Therefore, to insert the pipe, I needed the following tools:

  • 1. Perforator.
  • 2. Rotary hammer attachment - lance. It is allowed to use a small sledgehammer. But I want to warn you that this can damage the concrete ring.
  • 3. A drill for a perforator (eight or ten will do).

  • 4. Sand, for a protective cushion on which the pipe lies.
  • 5. Ordinary polyurethane foam or cement mortar.

Initially, the pipe must be brought to the pit. I sprinkled the trench with sand in advance, and a layer of about 8-10 centimeters turned out. Thanks to the sand cushion, the pipe will not deform during operation. After completing all the manipulations with the inset, the pipe should also be sprinkled on top with sand.

Let's start cutting the pipe

  • First, on the concrete ring where the hole is planned, I drew a corresponding circle. The diameter of the hole was prudently made slightly larger than the diameter of the pipe.
  • To make the hole in the ring neat, I took a hammer drill with a drill. First, I drilled many through holes along the diameter of the intended circle. This way I eliminated the risk of the ring bursting. In addition, the hole was flat.
  • Then I armed myself with a punch with a lance (an ordinary hammer is also suitable). Note that the hole can be knocked out from the outside or from the inside - it doesn't matter.
  • To the resulting hole from the inside of the sewer pit, I brought a pipe.
  • The gap that remained after all the manipulations performed, I repaired with polyurethane foam. A cement solution is also suitable for these purposes. If you, like me, take polyurethane foam, please note that it is advisable to apply it on a clean and slightly damp surface.

That's all the wisdom. If you follow these tips, you will cut the pipe correctly and you won't have to redo everything in the future.
