The name mixborder comes from the French words meaning mixed and border or border. The mixborder is necessarily limited by something and various plants are planted inside it.
Mixborder features
- Various types of plants are planted: flowers, deciduous, bushes, trees.
- The plantings should look natural, as if a piece of meadow has appeared on the site.
- Plants are selected with different heights, flowering periods, different foliage. But the growing conditions should be approximately the same: soil, light, humidity.
- Created both near a wall or fence, and in the center of the site.
- The tallest plants are planted in the background and in the center, the lowest plants are planted closer to the edge. They try not to overlap each other in height.
Color in mixborder
Some principles are used to create a mixborder. For example, such flower beds are distinguished by their color solution.
Sometimes monochrome flower beds are planted, consisting of shades of the same color. Contrasted contain opposite colors on the color palette. And polychrome ones suggest the presence of 2-4 colors located side by side.
Types of mixborders
- English. Competently planned, geometrically delineated, has strict straight boundaries, is often used as monochrome.
- Rustic style. Different crops are selected, with lush and abundant flowering. For most plants, this area should be the homeland.
- Lugovoi. It is created in the form of an alpine or steppe natural zone. Field and cereal flowers are mainly planted on flower beds.
- Shrub. In the background a tall tree is placed, often pyramidal and decorative, flowering bushes. The foreground is decorated with decorative deciduous plants.
- Vegetable. Most beloved by gardeners, as it pursues 2 goals: it decorates the site and gives a crop. When creating it, all the rules for designing a mixborder are observed. Vegetable crops are selected according to the shades of leaves and flowers, their shape. Plants are planted so that voids do not form as the harvest proceeds, and other vegetables take their place during growth.
- Mixed. Combines all types of mixborders. But, unlike them, during planting, preference is given to the most expensive and rare varieties.
Mixborder care
If you compose the composition correctly, then it will not be difficult to take care of the mixborder. It is only necessary to remove weeds in time, weed it, apply fertilizer and water. Since plants with the same growing conditions are planted on such a flower bed, you need to read the information on the packaging in which the plant was purchased. There will definitely be indicated the main points related to the planting and properties of flowers and bushes.
