Onions are very popular and loved by most people. Without it, as well as without potatoes, any dish rarely does. Therefore, one of the main beds is often allocated for culture. How to choose a set
The correct choice of planting material is a very important step in growing a crop. Sevok should not be shriveled or already sprouted. Also, when choosing, I examine the bulbs for rot and various damage. Damaged sevok will not grow well.
When buying planting material, I pay attention to its quality, not cost. A bargain item will not yield a good harvest, so you end up losing more.
A good set should be small, firm, with a solid, shiny and smooth husk.
Choice of landing dates
I, like most gardeners, plant onions in May. The exact date already depends on your climate zone. In the middle lane, planting can be carried out throughout May, while the soil is still wet.
During landing, it is necessary to be guided by the weather conditions. If the weather is wet and cool, you should take your time. You need to wait until the earth warms up to at least +15 degrees. If you hurry and plant a set in cold ground, there is a chance that it will go to the arrow. That is why it is better to wait for the weather to stabilize.
Preparing for landing
Before planting, you need to prepare both the planting material and the garden bed.
Garden bed
It is advisable to choose a site for onions in the fall. During the selection, I pay attention to the following points:
- Illumination. Onions do not develop well in shaded areas. Therefore, it should be planted only in sunny areas. In the shade, you will get small heads, and the feathers will not be very juicy.
- The soil. The soil should be nutritious and loose.
- Predecessors. Onions grow well after legumes and rye. The land in such areas is filled with nutrients and has sufficient air and moisture permeability. Potatoes, eggplants and courgettes are also good precursors. Do not plant onions after cucumbers, carrots and garlic.
After choosing a planting site, the bed must be prepared. In the fall, I definitely dig up the site in order to get rid of the pests that winter in the soil. After digging, I add fertilizer to the garden bed. Usually I use manure or compost, but you can replace them with mineral fertilizers. Then I level the earth with a rake and spill it with a solution of potassium permanganate for disinfection.
Planting material
Sevka preparation includes the following steps:
- Calibration. First, I go through the bow. For planting, I do not use wet bulbs on which there are signs of rotting. After that, I divide the entire set by size. Small ones will go to the pen, and the larger ones will go to the head.
- Drying and warming up. If the set was in a cool place, then a couple of weeks before planting, I dry it and warm it up. To do this, I lay it in a thin layer on a sunny windowsill for 2-3 days.
- Hardening. After that, I harden the planting material. To do this, I first put it in a container with hot water, and then with cold water. I hold each one for 5 minutes.
- Growth stimulant treatment. This is necessary to accelerate the germination of the seedlings. I use "Kornevin" or "Epin" in accordance with the instructions.
- Disinfection. For disinfection, I process the planting material in a weak solution of potassium permanganate. After that, I rinse and dry the sets. I carry out disinfection just before landing.
Landing
I plant the bulbs by pressing them into the ground so that only their tails are on the surface. I try to keep the distance between them at 10 cm. After planting, I water the garden.
