For me, the moss on the site evokes ambivalent emotions: on the one hand, it beautifully covers the ground with a soft wet carpet, so many people specifically try to decorate their garden with it. But on the other hand, these green glades often take up a fairly large area, making it difficult for the favorite flowers and strawberry bushes to develop.

To take a photo, I specially allowed moss to grow on the site behind the house. :)

Correctly refers to this vegetation as follows: if the moss is planted for decorative purposes, then it significantly improves the design of the site and has a right to exist. But the appearance of moss in the garden is the reason for taking measures to eliminate it.

Currently, there are several ways to deal with unwanted vegetation, but I try to use only traditional methods, which are a good alternative to aggressive chemistry. Or I’m trying to identify the main reason for the growth of moss and correct the situation.

What can be done to get rid of moss:

  • Get rid of excess moisture from the soil, which mosses adore: make drainage grooves, add sand to the soil, pierce as many holes in the ground with a pitchfork as possible or apply mulching with dry sawdust, hay or straw.
  • It often happens that the garden is dry, fertile and not shaded, and the plant just loves to fill the space. The reason, most likely, lies in the increased acidity of the earth. You can reduce acidity with chalk, fluff lime and other means, or with dolomite flour. It can be scattered over the surface of the soil in the first warm days of spring or autumn.
In this area, I cannot do without dolomite flour, here moss grows even on an area covered with granite slag many years ago.
  • Popular siderates - mustard, oil radish, rye, etc. - can help to correct the situation. They must be sown directly on the moss, allowed to grow, and then mowed and left on the ground. During the winter, they will make an excellent fertilizer that neutralizes the acidity of the soil.
  • A soil poor in nutrients is also often the cause of the appearance of moss. The easiest way to increase fertility is by adding fertilized soil to the moss-affected area in spring.

  • We need to think about how to get rid of the shading of the area. Providing access to the sun's rays on a clearing with moss, you can quickly eliminate the uninvited guest.
  • You can speed up the process of getting rid of moss by covering the clearing with a dark film or a shovel, removing the top layer of the soil along with the roots of the plant. My experience with fighting moss has been the constant loosening of the soil with a pitchfork or hoe. The soil dries up and becomes loose, and the plant cannot stand it.

In my case, I will say that the reason for the growth of moss in some parts of the garden is always prolonged rains and a long absence of the sun.
