Cucumbers love light, and abundant foliage creates shade during the growth of the lashes. A thickened planting leads not only to a decrease in yields, but also to the rapid spread of diseases.Removing excess leaves saves energy on fruit formation, rather than on foliage growth.
How do you shape a plant so it can get enough light and nourishment? There are many nuances that gardeners should know.
- Cucumber lashes grow very quickly, growing by several cm per day. The formation of a cucumber bush occurs by pinching unnecessary lateral shoots, that is, removing the growth point on them. After that, the lash stops growing, but greens begin to form and fill faster.
- In the case of a dense planting, it is better to form the plant in 1 stem. In the axils from the first to the fifth leaf, all lateral shoots are pinched to the base, without even leaving a hemp. This is aimed at ensuring that there is no strong thickening and decay in the lower part, and the stem in the lower part has enough light.
To strengthen and form roots up to 4-5 knots, it is necessary to cut off not only the stepsons and antennae, but also the ovaries. This should be done without regret, otherwise the growth of the whole plant will slow down, and you may not get the expected harvest.
- After the fifth node, only the ovaries are left, all lateral shoots are also removed up to 8-10 nodes. Most varieties of cucumber are self-pollinating, they grow best in 1 stem, which becomes stronger and can support the weight of multiple fruits.
After 8-10 knots, it's time to give free rein to the formation of lateral shoots on the main stem. Now they are not completely cut off, but only pinched after the second or third sheet.
- The main lashes, when they reach the top of the trellis, are twisted around it and allowed to grow downward. But when the main lash reaches 60 - 80 cm from the surface of the earth, it should also be pinched. Remove all unnecessary lower leaves from the stem, this will improve ventilation, correct plant formation, better illumination and get rid of barren flowers.
This procedure will lead to active growth of fruits, lengthen the fruiting period and increase the yield in general.
- During intensive pouring of fruits, the leaves begin to turn yellow and dry out. They must be removed without fail. It will also give more light and nourishment to the whips.
Observing these agrotechnical techniques, you can get a rich harvest even from a small garden.
