It couldn't be easier: we propagate the berry with the help of green cuttings

  • Jul 31, 2021

The method of growing berry plantations with green cuttings is so simple that it is suitable even for inexperienced gardeners. At the same time, no financial "injections" are needed: I cut the planting material in the spring and summer and in the fall I received seedlings ready to "move" to the berry field.

We cut and plant

The best material for grafting is young, green, slightly lignified shoots that do not break at the fold, 10 to 15 centimeters long. On the shoots, by the time of cut, five true buds should take shape.

  • From below, the shoot is cut obliquely, retreating five millimeters from the bottom of them. The upper cut is straight, a couple of centimeters above the upper kidney.
  • Before planting cuttings for rooting, remove the lower leaves. We leave only the top two. We shorten them, cutting off half: this way moisture will evaporate less.

  • For active rooting, dust the lower cut with "Kornevin".
  • New young shoots that have appeared will tell you that the cuttings have taken root. It's time to more actively accustom them to the open air: every day we remove the shelter for a while, every day we extend the air baths.
  • In the fall, we send the “teenage” seedlings to the “adult berry”.

To each his own

Many berry crops reproduce without any problems by cuttings, but each has its own "whims": the periods of cutting the planting material, planting rules differ.

Currants (all types)

Procurement period: May June.

Cuttings: length from 10 to 15 centimeters, three developed buds.

Disembarkation: at an angle, deepening to the upper leaves. The earth is compacted, watered, mulched with humus or peat, as in all other cases.

Sea buckthorn

Procurement period: June.

Cuttings: length from 10 to 12 centimeters, three buds.

Disembarkation: with a slope, deepening to the upper leaves. The distance between the future bushes is five centimeters. The earth is compacted, watered, mulched.

Honeysuckle

Procurement period: the beginning of June.

Cuttings: length from 10-15 centimeters, one developed kidney.

Disembarkation: vertical, with a deepening to the kidney. The earth is compacted and watered, periodically moistened.

Raspberries

Procurement period: when cutting the mother bush in the spring.

Basal processes: the length is 10 centimeters while the tops of the processes are cut off.

Disembarkation: with a slope (45 degrees), deepening to the upper leaves.

Gooseberry

Procurement period: June, second half.

Cuttings: length 10-15 centimeters, five developed buds.

Disembarkation: at an angle with a distance of five centimeters between future bushes, deepening to the upper leaves. The soil is compacted, watered, mulched.

What to consider

But for all its simplicity, the budget method of green cuttings has its own characteristics:

  • Experienced gardeners are engaged in harvesting cuttings from the end of May to mid-June.
  • Cuttings are rooted in the greenhouse. In its absence, plastic wrap can be used as a covering material. Glass jars and cut plastic bottles will also work.
  • Freshly planted cuttings need to be shaded, protecting them from the scorching sun.
  • Young plantings are shown water procedures (water spraying) and periodic ventilation, which implies temporary removal of the shelter.
  • For successful rooting, temperature and humidity are of great importance. Ideally, the daytime air temperature should be 25 degrees, the nighttime should be at least 15, and the air humidity should be 85-90 percent.
  • Optimal harvesting weather:
    - cloudy - any time of the day;
    - sunny - extremely early in the morning.
  • The clipping tool is well sharpened, very sharp. It is best to use a grafting knife. The pruner "spoils" the cuttings by pinching them.
  • The ground should be loose. This can be, for example, a sand-compost substrate, the ingredients for which are taken in equal parts.
  • Stimulating the development of seedlings will be facilitated by feeding them with liquid fertilizers containing a minimum of nitrogen.
As you can see, the agricultural technique for breeding the berry is quite simple. If everything is done according to the rules, then the rooted cuttings by the end of the first and second growing seasons will become full-fledged bushes that can please with the first harvest.
