Good afternoon, dear guests and subscribers of my channel!

Each owner of a private house who has a solid fuel boiler, fireplace or bathhouse in the yard in his house, annually, before the onset of cold weather, prepares firewood.

And, in this article, I would like to talk about a very simple wood splitter, which will not be difficult to assemble on your own, and a handy man can make such a structure even within 3-4 hours. The principle of operation is based on a lever mechanism, the explanation of which was first made by Archimedes, finding the relationship between strength, weight and shoulder.

Usually, firewood is harvested from sawn round logs by splitting them with an ax or a cleaver. But, on a large scale, only a man with the necessary skill can do this.

This wood splitter allows you to do with less energy costs:

The illustration above shows a wood splitter that is rigidly attached to a stationary object. Having made special clamps, it can be attached to any posts or tree trunks - then it becomes portable.

But, there is another figurative variation, just described in the magazine of the Soviet era in 1991. - "Do it yourself". The journal is available in open sources, you can see for yourself:

The wood splitter has a metal platform and two stiffeners, to which a pipe is welded. If in the first version, the working height of the proposed log is regulated by the thickness of the stand, then here - the pipe with holes serves as a guide and allows you to adjust the height of the lever itself and the blade relative to chump.

The log is split into pieces by means of a sharpened metal plate at the moment of pressing the handle and the longer the handle, the higher the impact force on the log is, and this dependence is just calculated by the formula Archimedes.

Thus, having a handle length of 1.5 m, it is enough to apply a force of 50 kgf in order to obtain a knife pressure on the block of 500 kgf.
Even neglecting the weight of the structure itself, with point load along the blade half a ton, the block from the pointed part flies in half!

According to the same principle, factory-made compact mechanical wood splitters and wood chips are produced, but designed for small logs:

This wood splitter has one drawback: the long handle. To split dense logs, the handle can be up to 1.7 m long, and, accordingly, must have the necessary rigidity.

But, there are many advantages:

Reliable mechanism with a minimum of hinges. There is practically nothing to break. Allows you to easily and safely solve the annual problem. It is very easy to assemble from materials stored at the site: pipes, fittings, a corner, and as a the blades can be welded to the handle a metal plate sharpened with a grinder or a wedge from a broken ax.

I would be glad if you liked the article and became useful!

Thanks for attention!
