Many compatriots know about the Buran reusable spacecraft, made in the 1980s in the Soviet Union. Until now, the remains of Buran are located at Baikonur in Kazakhstan. Why does Russia not want to return such an important object of Soviet heritage to their homeland? After all, it is Russia that is the legal successor of the USSR.

Russia can be the successor of anything, but it has nothing to do with the situation with the Buran space shuttle. And if someone in the vastness of the vast fatherland suddenly has a heart ache for the space program in general and Buran in particular, then “thank you” he can say to those who abolished the Soviet Union, and then in the "dashing 90s" arranged the privatization of state property into private arms.
In the national republics of the former USSR, the same thing happened that happened in the Russian Federation. All state property located on the territory of the former republics of the Union became the property of the new national republics. And all this property was also privatized with rare exceptions. Buran was no exception, which turned from Soviet belongings into Kazakh property. In the context of a change in the economic formation and the abolition of a single country, the new government had full and legal right do whatever she pleases with her property.

Let Buran today be in an extremely sad state, but it is still stuffed with quite valuable technologies. Which would not be averse to receive not only Russia, but also other countries with a developed space and aviation industry. For example, France, China or the USA. And if it has not become clear to someone else: Buran was privatized and today belongs to a private person, just like thousands of Soviet factories, power plants, roads and much more.
The remains of the Buran ship, as well as its model, belong to the joint-stock company RSC Baikonur. And its owner, in turn, is Dauren Musa, who holds the post of General Director in RKK. The authorities of Kazakhstan have been suing the new private owners of the spacecraft for three years, but they cannot do anything. The law is on the side of the latter. At the same time, Dauren himself has repeatedly stated that he is ready to defend his ownership of the Soviet shuttle in international courts.
