Good afternoon, dear guests!
At the end of 2019, I wrote an article about the first impressions of the fig planted on my site. If you're interested, link to the first article: "Fig. My cultivation experience. Frost-resistant grade up to -35 ° С "
Now, already coming to the end of 2020. and the annual growth of figs is good news. The sapling was bought in 2017, the twig reached 30 cm in height, after 2 years - the height of the bush was about 70 cm, now, the bush is already one and a half meters high:
The "honey" variety is actually a frost-resistant variety. I have confirmed that it tolerates -19 ° C - it does not die, and even if the stem is frozen, the fig grows very quickly from the root the next year, in the spring I cut off the tips stuck in the frost. There is just a small nuance, at 0 ° C it immediately drops leaves and unripe fruits, so in November you can not wait for the latter to ripen (it all depends on the climate of the region).
In 2017 - there were about 5 berries from one branch;
In 2018 - ~ 20 berries were harvested from the bush;
In 2019, having collected about 40 berries, we lost the same amount, since at the beginning of November they caught a frost. This is what I found when I woke up in the morning:
This year, we decided not to leave fruiting on its own and in August, we fed him well. Now, I hope (ugh, ugh, ugh) that he will bring us much more harvest before the coming first frosts, since the branches are already bursting with berries, which alternately - one or two a day already are poured.
Of course, they do not have time to ripen to the end, because the children follow this and immediately pluck it :-))) Well, they love this berry, what to do ...
Collected yesterday:
Why planted and what do you like?
1. As already noted, the variety is frost-resistant;
2. Almost all figs, including the "honey" variety - remontant, bear fruit in May-June and September-October;
3. There is one berry under each leaf, therefore "honey" is considered one of the most fruitful;
4. According to open sources, a 10-year-old bush grows no more than 3 meters in height - i.e. undersized.
The only thing that is important is to cover it in the winter, because tolerates negative temperatures, but does not tolerate icing of branches.
Of course, this process of building a shelter takes a lot of time, since the frame needs a reliable one that will withstand both wind and snow.
But! It's worth it, believe me!
Thanks!
