WD-40: myths and contrived properties. Where in everyday life is it forbidden to use WEDEShka?

Good afternoon, dear guests and subscribers of my channel!

Today, WD-40 is sold even in the smallest retail stores, because the product is promoted almost to the point of universality:

Loop squeaks - WD-40!
Need to lubricate the chain - WD-40!
Rusted hinge - WD-40!
Peel off paint - WD-40!
Out of soap - WD-40!
No drink - WD-40! WD-40? WD-40!
(Exaggerating)

Why WD and why 40?

WD-40 or Water Displacement - literally "displaced liquid / water" or "water displacer", the number 40 means that with for the fortieth attempt, a team led by chemist Norman Larsen created the optimal composition of deep penetration, displacing water.

Several decades ago, a tremendous mass injection of information was made that the WD-40 is a solution to all tasks both in everyday life and in the automotive field.

But, the real design goal of WD is moisture displacement. This liquid softens rust well, but does not lubricate rubbing parts and does not protect against corrosion, moreover, it displaces the existing grease, exposing the part. It is important that after applying WD-40, it is required to re-lubricate the part, therefore, the use of the composition does not cancel the lubrication, and therefore does not save money, as many users assume.

WD works ideally with tight threaded connections because of its excellent penetration, but after evaporation of the composition (yes, that is, evaporation) - this substance opens the way to moisture, increasing the likelihood of corrosion in places application.

So, the real properties that WD-40 can boast of:

  • excellent penetrating ability between the surface of the part and foreign matter (rust, dirt, grease, paint, bitumen, glue), as a result of which - excellent surface cleaning;
  • short-term protection of the surface from dust and dirt due to the formation of an oil film.

Attributed properties / myths:

  • corrosion protection;
  • degreasing;
  • parts lubrication;
  • application on all surfaces;
  • anti-freeze properties;
  • antioxidant contacts.

Do not lubricate:

  1. Firearms;
  2. Locks of all types (removes wear, removes grease and prevents joint uniform wear of the lock secret and key);
  3. Chains of any mechanisms;
  4. Gears or gears;
  5. Brake discs / pads;
  6. Electrical wiring (increases the likelihood of burning contacts).
Important! The composition cannot be used where long-term lubrication is required.
When using WD-40 as a lubricant, the effect is achieved only for a short period of time. As already described above, the product evaporates, moreover, the composition has a very liquid consistency for better penetration, therefore it is not suitable as a good lubricant. In this connection, it is better to use silicone grease, lithol and grease.

As a result, WD-40 is not a universal tool, unlike public opinion. It is a non-durable compound that quickly helps to get rid of dirt, clean the surface or disassemble a sour compound.
