Properties of baking soda
Sodium bicarbonate is the sodium salt of carbonic acid. Dissolving in water, this substance gives the solution slightly alkaline acidity. The peculiarity of such a liquid is that when the concentration of soda changes, pH does not undergo significant changes. This property is especially valuable when working with soil.
In addition, NaHCO3 has weak bactericidal properties, which makes it suitable for fighting pathogenic microorganisms.
This substance has a number of properties, however, in agriculture, soda is used for its ability to influence the pH of solutions and microorganisms.
How can you use soda in the country
Here are 10 ways to use baking soda in your garden:
- Change in soil acidity. NaHCO3 is weak, but fast. This is the difference between this deoxidizer and other products. However, for a quick action, it is not necessary to apply a powder to the soil, but a solution. Its concentration should be no more than 100 g per 1 liter of water. You need to water the land free of plants. Otherwise, the desired effect will not be achieved. After watering, the soil must be slightly loosened.
- Fight against powdery mildew. This is a fungal disease that can reduce yields and ruin plantings. The solution is prepared at the rate of 1 tbsp. l. NaHCO3 per liter of water. Here you need to add 1 tbsp. l. vegetable oil and liquid dishwashing detergent. Plants are sprayed with this mixture once a week until the symptoms of the disease disappear. There is a soap solution. To do this, 5 liters of water must be diluted with 2 tbsp. l. soda and 100 ml of a concentrated solution of laundry soap.
- Top dressing for tomatoes. Sodium bicarbonate is not applied to the soil, but to the leaves. It is necessary to make a solution with a concentration of soda of 0.5%. They are sprayed with tops during the period of fruit ripening. Watering can also be carried out, but this must be done under the root and with a solution with a high concentration (3.5%). From this procedure, the tomatoes become sweeter.
- Spraying grapes. This is done with the aim of improving the flavor of the berries and fighting gray mold. For this, a solution with a bicarbonate concentration of 5% is used.
- Rejuvenation of roses. Add 1 tsp to 10 liters of water. l. ammonia and 1 tbsp. l. soda and magnesium sulfate. After several sprays, the rose bush will begin to actively form new shoots with flowers.
- Fighting caterpillars. The use of bicarbonate helps in situations where many butterfly larvae appear on crops with large leaves. Create a dry mixture of flour and baking soda (1 to 1 ratio), then sprinkle it on the ground and leaves. It is better to do this in dry weather and in the evening.
- Elimination of aphids. Spraying plants with a soda solution is carried out at a time when stronger agents can harm what people use for food. Spraying is carried out with a solution with a soda concentration of 3%.
- Weed control agent. Use NaHCO3 like any chemical with care. They do this only on the paths. If you regularly sprinkle soda powder in the cracks between the sidewalk slabs or simply on the trampled paths, then the plants will not grow here. This is due to the strong alkalization of the soil. However, it should be borne in mind that the soda is washed out and carried to neighboring areas, which changes the pH of the soil in an undesirable direction.
- Disinfection of seeds. For this, the seed is laid out on a cloth moistened with a solution of soda (0.5%). The processing time is about 5 hours.
- Extending the life of cut flowers. To do this, a sodium bicarbonate solution is poured into a vase (1 tsp. l. for 1 liter of water).
This list cannot be considered exhaustive. However, here are the most common uses for NaHCO3. It is a product capable of changing soil, controlling pests and feeding plants in the growing season.
