How to transport plants correctly

Since this task is faced by almost every gardener, I want to share my own experience and suggest using several of my tricks for transporting seedlings to the country. Not every family has a private car, which makes the process much easier. For a long time I transported young plants in nets of fabric and in a backpack, carrying out 2 transplants by transport and walking several kilometers. And during this time I made several useful conclusions:

  • the number of seedlings taken with you should not be too large;
  • watering the soil should be stopped in advance;
  • it is necessary to choose the right weather conditions.
First of all, it is important to calculate your strength in order to have time to plant all the plants, as well as to deliver the planting material safe and sound. This is best achieved with a small amount of seedlings transported. Instances that are not planted right away may die or experience severe stress, resulting in poor survival.

Influences the process and the weather, which should not be too hot. It is advisable to transplant on a cloudy, windless day at an air temperature of + 15... + 20 ° С. On a clear day, plants may overheat in the sun during transport.

Other tricks

It is recommended to give the seedlings a short rest after transportation, since a long journey will negatively affect the transplanted crop. For this purpose, the seedlings should be taken to a cool room with high humidity. A darkened room, a temporary house, a bathhouse or a veranda where the sun's rays do not fall will do. 1.5-2 hours is enough for the plants to adapt to new conditions. During this period, you can find a place for planting and prepare the ground.

There is one more nuance that is not observed by all summer residents. Trying to provide the culture with the most comfortable conditions, many on the eve or on the day of the trip abundantly fertilize and water the soil. In no case should this be done, since the plants become fragile and can break from the slightest touch. At first, I also did not adhere to this rule, feeling sorry for the slightly wilted seedlings. But after repeatedly breaking branches and stems, I decided not to subject them to such tests anymore.

In order to avoid damage to the planting material, watering should be stopped 2-3 days before planting, then the losses will be minimal. In such a short period of time, the plants will not have time to dry out, they will only slightly wither. And the lack of moisture is easily eliminated by watering after planting in the ground.

You need to know how to properly package your seedlings. When transporting by train or bus, 1 hand must be free to hold onto the handrails and pay for travel. If cucumbers, pumpkins, watermelons and other crops planted in the 3-4 leaf phase are transported, then the containers in which the seedlings grew should be used. In the case of tall specimens: eggplants, tomatoes, peppers, transportation without excess soil and containers is permissible. The same applies to any varieties of cabbage, which can be transported directly in the package.

To do this, remove the culture from the pots, shake off most of the soil and wrap the roots with damp paper or cloth. Then they go up, covering the seedling completely, and place the seedlings in a bag, carefully putting everything in a box or box with strong walls.

Transporting in containers makes the task even easier. The pots are placed in a box, fencing off the plants with newspaper so that they stand upright. Scotch tape is attached to the edges of the box, constructing handles from it. Following these simple rules will help to preserve the seedlings as much as possible and prepare them for further growth and development.
