Preparatory work
Garlic cloves for planting in open ground must be healthy and of high quality, so at the stage of selection it is worth assessing their condition and making sure there are no defects. In order to prevent diseases, planting specimens are soaked for 30 minutes in a weak manganese solution. Potassium permanganate can be replaced with copper sulfate at a concentration of 1%. This treatment protects the plant from diseases and parasites.
You should prepare a bed for winter garlic. In order to stimulate fruiting for garlic, a fertile soil with neutral pH or low acidity is prepared. The plot is fed with various fertilizers. The amount of introduced substances per 1 sq. m looks like this:
- 10 kg of humus;
- 2 tbsp. ash;
- 1 tbsp. chalk.
In addition, potassium sulfate is used as a fertilizer at the rate of 2 tbsp. l. for 1 sq. m.
Having finished feeding the beds, it is necessary to dig up the soil to a depth of 20 cm. Garlic should not be fertilized with organic matter. it negatively affects the state of the future harvest.
When choosing a landing site, it is better to give preference to well-lit areas. Their width should be up to 1 m and their height up to 25 cm. After digging thoroughly, it is important to wait for the soil to settle.
If there are a lot of weeds growing in the garden, they can be sprayed with herbicides. After 14-20 days, the substrate is dug onto 1 shovel bayonet.
Winter garlic develops well in the area where the following crops grew before:
- Zucchini.
- Cereals.
- Patissons.
Moreover, it can be grown in one place only once every 4-6 years.
Planting and leaving
The time of planting garlic before winter is determined by regional and weather conditions. Experienced gardeners begin the procedure after the onset of persistent cold weather, but without lowering the temperature to negative values. In such an environment, the plant forms healthy roots, and the growth of green mass stops. In central Russia, the landing begins around October.
The size of the planting material varies from 3 to 4 cm. The distance between individual specimens in a row is 10-12 cm, and between rows - 35-45 cm. The optimum groove depth is 6-8 cm. When carrying out planting work, the teeth must not be pressed into the ground; instead, they must be placed vertically in the groove.
After completing the planting, the grooves should be covered with soil or compost, without resorting to strong soil compaction. The garden bed is covered with dry foliage mulch or spunbond. The latter option is suitable for northern regions with harsh winters.
In the spring, after the snow has melted and the first shoots appear, garlic can be fertilized with nitrogen-containing compounds. For this, urea can be used at the rate of 12-20 g per 1 m².
When the area is fertilized, you should loosen the soil within the row spacings. Further spring care involves removing weeds and loosening the area.
In summer, winter garlic is watered 2-3 times during the growing season. For these purposes, you cannot use cold water, as it can cause the development of diseases. Therefore, the container with the liquid must be placed in a sunny area so that it warms up.
In summer, garlic can be supplemented with minerals, including a mixture of phosphorus and potassium.
To protect the crop from putrefactive processes, harvesting must be performed after all the heads have ripened. When cutting off shoots, it is important to leave a long neck (up to 10 cm), and dry the dug out fruits in an open space or in a special drying chamber. For long-term storage of the crop, it is required to maintain the temperature regime within 1-3 ° C and humidity up to 75%.
Winter garlic is harvested from the garden in mid-summer or early August.
