Vine shelter rules

When deciding how to properly cover grapes for the winter, it is necessary to take into account the climatic conditions of the region and the characteristics of the landscape. Regardless of the climate, seedlings are sheltered for 1-2 years, as well as European grape varieties and hybrids.

Specialists use the following types of shelters:

  • near-stamping;
  • semi-shelter of the vine;
  • complete closure.
On the territory of central Russia, a shelter for vines begins to be prepared in the 2nd half of October (after the start of frost). For hardening, it is required to leave the branches without covering material at a temperature of -5... -8 ° C. Tempered lashes keep well until spring.

Preparatory work before closing the vine bushes includes the following work:

  • In dry weather - abundant watering.
  • In September, fertilizing with potassium and phosphorus fertilizers is performed.
  • After the leaves have dried, the unripe lashes are cut off.
  • Bushes are processed with iron or copper sulfate, dissolved in water.
  • The branches are sprayed with special agents against insect pests and diseases.
  • Shoots are removed from the wire and tied in bundles.
  • The covering material is prepared and disinfected.

The following materials are used for shelter:

  • spunbond;
  • spruce branches;
  • mats;
  • sackcloth;
  • reed mats;
  • straw;
  • roofing material;
  • wooden boards;
  • straw, etc.
Materials must be dry, clean and treated with antifungal agents. Straw, roofing material and wood are treated with copper sulfate diluted in water or with special pest control agents.

Shelter options

The grapes can be covered with spruce branches. The branches are removed from the supports, cut off, laid out on the spruce branches of coniferous trees. Then they are fixed with hooks on the soil in the center along the bed. The bushes are covered with spruce branches; the layer thickness is 5-10 cm.

Shields from the boards are laid out on top; covered with roofing material or polyethylene. It is recommended to cover the root system carefully; lashes can withstand temperatures as low as -25 ° C. Lapnik is easily removed in spring. Coniferous branches can be replaced with straw, but in this case it is necessary to use anti-rodent equipment.

Reed mats are easy to use for shelter. The thickness of the materials must be at least 7 cm, the length and width of the mats are selected taking into account the characteristics of the landings. Scourges from 2 grape bushes are tied up, bent to the ground using compact arcs so that a space of up to 10-15 cm remains to the ground surface.

On the sides, boards must be attached to the arcs. From above, everything is covered with reed mats, after which the structure is covered with plastic wrap. It is required to make vents from the end parts, which are tightly closed in frosts. In the spring, vents open. The shelter prevents the bushes from freezing and overheating. The mats are resistant to decay and are not damaged by rodents.

In the southern regions, the grapevine is buried near the stamp. Work starts in the 2nd half of November. After processing the bushes, they begin to cover the roots of the grapes. The root system is damaged at a temperature of -5 ..- 7 ° C. After the onset of frost, an earthen embankment is formed around the boles. For shelter, soil is used from the aisles, which covers the head of the bush and the trunk in the lower part.

The hill is formed with a diameter of at least 30 cm, the height of the embankment is 10-25 cm. After the roots are closed, the lashes are removed from the supports and laid out on the wire from below or on the ground. In winter weather down to -15 ° C, covering work is not required. At lower temperatures, experts recommend closing the bushes with burlap, straw, boards, bedspreads, blankets. The protective layer must be at least 4 cm. Materials are strengthened with bindings or twine.
