The main advantages of the variety
The mass of strawberries reaches 60 g. Their flesh is dense, which makes this variety one of the most transportable. The berries taste sweet with a subtle sourness.
Strawberry Elizabeth 2 belongs to the remontant varieties. Its fruiting period is quite long, so the berries can be picked from late May to early October. It easily tolerates short-term drought and is resistant to disease.
Site preparation
This berry prefers light, neutral soil and does not like stagnant water. The site must be sunny and sheltered from the wind.
The plot is cleared of weeds by carefully removing the roots of perennial plants. If necessary, measures are taken to improve the soil. With increased acidity, 0.5-1 kg of lime is added to it per 1 sq. m. Alkaline soil is gypsum, and clay soil is diluted with sand. Special soil mixtures improve the texture and structure of the soil. They are based on peat. It is combined with garden soil and sand in equal proportions. For loamy soils, sand is taken 5-6 times less. Peat can be diluted with sawdust in a 1: 2 ratio.
The soil is enriched with mineral fertilizers or organic matter based on mullein or chicken droppings. A good top dressing is an organic-mineral complex for strawberries from Fertika.
Strawberry propagation and planting scheme
The easiest way is to reproduce by shoots from a mustache. The best seedlings are obtained from the rosettes closest to the mother plant. Bushes transplanted in August are already blooming in the fall. Peduncles are cut off from them to allow the plants to grow stronger.
If there is a shortage of planting material, you can dig out two- or three-year-old bushes and, carefully separating them, transplant them to a new place.
When propagating by seeds, the trays are filled with soil and moistened. The seeds are evenly distributed over the surface, lightly pressing down with a spoon. The trays are covered with glass and left in a warm, well-lit place. Seedlings are sprayed with warm water and fed with solutions of complex fertilizers. Transplant seedlings after the formation of 3 true leaves. Seeds sown in February already produce their first berries in July.
When planting, the distance between the bushes is maintained about 30 cm, the row spacing should be at least 60 cm. With a placement density of 5 bushes per 1 sq. m you can get up to 1.5 kg of berries from one bush. Variety Elizabeth 2 can be planted in a flower pot or on a vertical bed. This not only saves space, but also beautifies the site.
Strawberry care
In good weather conditions, strawberries are watered 2-3 times a week. Mulching the beds helps to retain moisture and inhibits the growth of weeds.
Elizabeth 2 has long-term fruiting, she needs additional feeding during the entire growing season. Organomineral complexes are introduced in the form of aqueous solutions with a frequency of 1 every 2-3 weeks.
In order for the yield to be high and the fruits to be large, it is recommended to constantly remove the mustache and pick off the first flower stalks.
To prevent fungal diseases in stable wet weather, strawberries are treated with fungicides.
