Seeds are good, cuttings are better

Chrysanthemums are propagated in different ways. You can sow seeds or divide an already finished bush into several parts. But the most effective way is cuttings. The advantage of this option is that a seedling can be quickly obtained from plants of rare varieties with one hundred percent preservation of their characteristics. "Cutting" chrysanthemums can bloom in spring or autumn. From purchased seeds, it is not known what will grow, and whether it will grow at all, and this process is longer.

As for dividing the bush, this procedure is not suitable for some varieties: they do not take root well.

Autumn grafting methods

Cutting can be done in several ways.

Like a bush

Experienced growers choose the option of "extraction" of planting material from the mother bush. It is harvested in late autumn, when the first light frosts are already beginning to "grab" the ground. They do it like this:

  • All stems are cut from the parent plant at a height of about five centimeters from the ground.
  • Prepare a container for the "mother liquor": make holes at the bottom and lay a drainage layer - 2-5 centimeters.
  • 1-2 weeks after pruning, a bush is dug out, placed with an earthen lump in a prepared container, covered with soil or sand.
  • The mother plant is sent "to rest" in the cool. In order for the stems to "start" ahead of time, it is important to observe the temperature regime: 4-7 degrees with a "plus" sign.
Sleepy chrysanthemum does not need watering. You can moisten the soil from time to time, but not fill it. Otherwise, the root will rot and nothing will work.
  • In February, the mother plant will be relocated to a warm place and watered generously. In five to ten days, the buds will come to life and young stalks will go.
  • The shoots that have grown by ten centimeters are cut off, leaving stumps with two pairs of leaves on the "parent". Subsequently, new stems will appear on the stumps. You need to choose strong stems for grafting, it is better not to touch small and frail processes - let them gain strength.
  • Cut off a couple of lower leaves from the cut stems (leave the buds).
  • Plant the cuttings in separate containers with moistened soil. Planting depth - 1.5-2 centimeters. You can plant 1-3 cuttings in one container. If a long container is selected for planting, then the distance between plantings is 5-7 centimeters.

With this method of cuttings, chrysanthemums root well without any stimulants for root growth.

Originally from blooming"Mothers"

This can be done with a plant in October-November:

  • Cut the stems into cuttings (10-15 centimeters in length), it is better to leave those segments that were located closer to the roots.
  • Cut off the two bottom leaves.
  • Place the stems in a transparent container with settled water.
  • Add a little of any rooting stimulant.
  • Place on a windowsill out of direct sunlight.
  • Add water periodically. It is not necessary to completely change it in order to preserve the created microflora.
  • After about a month, when roots and first sprouts appear on the cuttings, plant them in a container with soil, cover with plastic wrap, and moisten the soil.
  • After rooting and the beginning of active growth, remove the "greenhouses" from them.
  • When the outdoor air temperature is above 50, start hardening the seedlings. For this, containers with chrysanthemums are daily “walk” on the loggia, prolonging the “walks” (you can start from 10-15 minutes).

It is not difficult to cope with the "increase in livestock" using cutting techniques. With a competent approach, beautiful flowers will revive the suburban area with their lush flowering from spring to autumn frosts.
