How to prevent the appearance of umbrellas

If we grow dill without umbrellas in the open field, then when sowing, several conditions must be met:

  • The ambient temperature should not be lower than + 2... + 5 ºС, and the soil should be completely thawed. For reliability 5-7 days before planting, it is watered with hot water.
  • Sowing dates are mid-March to mid-May.
  • Early varieties are planted in early spring. Sowing early dill late will speed up flowering.
  • The soil for the plant needs neutral. Dill develops poorly in acidic soil, its greens turn red, and in alkaline ones they turn yellow.

  • The bed is pre-filled with manure (5-10 kg / sq. m).
  • The place is chosen sunny or partial shade. With a lack of sun, the bushes become thinner and lose their emerald color.
  • The best location of the ridge is from north to south, so that the crops are evenly illuminated and warmed.
  • The spice plot is protected from the wind. It is advisable to cover it with vegetables or flowers.
  • The plant produces lush greenery with a daylight hours of 10-14 hours. When the daylight period lengthens, it will quickly throw out the umbrella.
  • This spice is not sown in areas with stagnant water after rain.
  • Before planting, the seeds are kept in a gauze bag for 2 days in water heated to +50 ºС, then, after taking them out of the water, they are covered with wet gauze and germinated for 4 days. The procedure accelerates germination by 2 weeks.
  • Seeds are planted in grooves to a depth of no more than 1 cm and covered with nutritious soil mixture. Sow densely, not observing the required distance of 5 cm. So dill does not bloom longer.
  • The distance between the rows (20 cm) is maintained for the free development of the root system.
  • Water moderately after planting.

Another method of sowing dill is similar to planting a lawn. The seeds are evenly spread over the prepared loose, damp surface and buried with a rake.

What is important to consider when leaving

Dill grows quickly. Usually, the green branches are cut after a month. If you plant bush varieties (Gribovsky, Grenadier, Redoubt, Hello, Aligator, Borey), then the greens will appear 7-10 days later. But on the other hand, they do not release a stem with an umbrella for almost a month.

In ordinary varieties, it is possible to lengthen the "bush" period by cutting off the emerging peduncle and gradually cutting off 20 cm high branches from the sides.

Top dressing

During the growth period, spring sowing dill does not need additional feeding. If the garden bed was not filled with fertilizer in advance, then with poor development, the plant is sometimes fed in the middle of the growing season with liquid complex fertilizer or herbal infusion of nettle.

Watering

The topsoil under the plant must be kept moist. When the soil is dry, the ejection of peduncles immediately begins. Watering dill is recommended drip (or abundantly) 1-2 times a week.

Loosening

After each watering, the aisles must be loosened to a depth of 8-12 cm. Weeding also helps to improve soil aeration and oxygen flow to the roots. If necessary, the plants are thinned out, otherwise their growth stops, and the leaves turn yellow and wither.

You can cut dill several times, early in the morning, when it is as lush and fresh as possible.
