Characteristic differences between varieties and hybrids
Varietal types are created by cloning one plant without subsequent genetic modification. Each variety of sweet peppers is initially selected and adapted to specific temperature conditions.
A hybrid is obtained by crossing the maternal and paternal lines. The purpose of breeding: to increase productivity, disease resistance, improve the external and taste of the product. Hybrid seeds are designated F1.
Advantages and disadvantages
Sweet pepper varieties and hybrids are similar to each other, but at the same time have some distinctive features.
Gardeners prefer to grow varietal vegetables, because they are rich in vitamins and unpretentious in care. The collected plant seeds can be used next year.
Hybrids give a large yield and are not attacked by pests. Planting material is not harvested, and every year a new product is bought. This is due to the fact that the seeds of the grown hybrid peppers lose all their genetic properties.
The best varieties
Among the large number of varieties of sweet peppers, several of the most popular can be distinguished:
- Triton. Easily tolerates temperature extremes and heavy rains. Gives a high yield: up to 40 kg of cone-shaped fruits with thick (about 6 mm) walls can be removed from one bush. Color: yellow, orange or red.
- Apricot favorite. Differs in rich sweet taste and peach color. Grows on land without shelter, suitable for growing in cold regions of the Russian Federation.
- Lumina (Belozerka). Even in arid regions, it bears a lot of fruit with a slight taste of bitterness. Vegetables do not lose their presentation within 3 months.
- Agapovsky. It ripens early and is filled with large scarlet fruits weighing 100-110 g, which contain many trace elements. The plant is difficult to tolerate high humidity.
- Ivanhoe. It is grown in greenhouse conditions, since it cannot give a good harvest during a drought. Unripe pods have a creamy hue, later they become dark red.
Varieties of hybrids
Hybrid peppers are inexpensive, can be stored for a long time and do not deteriorate during transportation. The most famous types:
- Isabella F1. The pods ripen on tall bushes that require a garter to support them. The mass of a grown cuboid vegetable reaches 130 g.
- Cardinal F1. Pepper is very similar to eggplant: it has a purple color and a large elongated shape, weighs up to 250 g.
- Atlantic F1. Resistant to various diseases. Bears fleshy fruits (about 400 g each) of green, red or yellow color.
- Cockatoo F1. In appearance it resembles a parrot's beak. With proper care, up to 3 kg of bright red product is removed from one bush.
Sweet peppers are conventionally divided into 2 types: greenhouse and outdoor. Therefore, when buying seeds, you need to read the accompanying instructions, which describe the basic requirements for growing vegetables.
