Why do I need a transplant

Peonies are perennial plants that can grow and bloom for a long time in one place. But in the case when the bush ceases to please with lush flowering, it needs to be transplanted into a more suitable soil.

The procedure is carried out in the fall. The essence of this principle is that when transplanting, the bush must overwinter in new conditions and begin to bloom in the spring. It is easier for the plant to adapt in cool weather. In addition, the nutrients accumulated by the fall in the root system will allow it to adapt to frost.

How to prepare a place and bushes for transplanting

Before digging out the plants, a new site is prepared for it. This should be a well-lit area, without drafts, preferably away from fences, since the bushes do not like overheating. The soil in this place should not be very wet so that the culture does not start to rot. In conditions of stagnant water and insufficient sunlight, the bushes will not bloom.

Having chosen a site, they dig a large hole so that the earth with humus, mixed with one’s own hand, or a substrate bought in a store, can fit in it. You need to prepare the hole in the summer. Its diameter should be at least 80 cm, depth - 70 cm. Adjacent pits are located 1 m from each other.

Drainage is laid in the recess, and then 2/3 is filled with a mixture of sand, humus and earth. Fertilize the soil, mix with drainage and water. Until autumn, the soil in the pit will be compacted.

Before planting, carefully dig out the peony. Digging is done from below, stepping back 30 cm from the extreme stems and pulling out a long trench. They try not to damage the roots and get them along with a clod of earth. It is recommended to reach the bush with a pitchfork. You cannot pull on the stems so as not to damage the buds. Any dried or damaged roots can be trimmed.

The green stems of the plant are cut to a level of 10-15 cm, removing all the leaves. From several branches, you can choose 1 young specimen with shoots and buds on the roots, cut off the rest. Places of cuts are immediately treated with a solution of potassium permanganate or wood ash.

Then the bush is left in the shade for several hours so that its roots dry out and do not break.

Transplant process

The dried bush is placed in a prepared hole, covered with earth to the brim, tamped and watered well. Moisture stagnation should not be allowed.

Peony adapts well to new growing conditions, like many perennials. Although decorative species are more demanding on natural conditions than ordinary ones. After transplanting, you need to ensure that the roots and buds are covered with soil by at least 5 cm. It is worth regularly watering the plant, applying fertilizers, loosening and mulching the soil. This will help the bush to winter successfully.
