How to properly freeze onions
When choosing onions for freezing, keep only healthy, whole vegetables. Next, clean, wash and dry the heads with a waffle towel.
It should be pointed out here that simply freezing the onion does not make sense. At low temperatures it becomes watery.
Heat treatment
- Roasting. Cut the onion into cubes (you can also use half rings) and lightly fry it in vegetable oil. Then we throw it into a colander, after which we pack it in cellophane and hide it in the freezer. Onions made in this way will not harden, which will significantly reduce the preparation time for use.
- For the boil method. Peel and rinse the onion. Boil two liters of water in a saucepan. Add a tablespoon of salt and dip the onion in water for five minutes. Then take out, rinse in cold water, put in a colander. And when the liquid drains, you can put the onions in plastic containers and put them in the freezer.
- Drying in the oven. Put chopped and dried onions on a baking sheet (oiled) and dry for 5 minutes at 180 degrees. Then we put it in a convenient container and put it in the refrigerator.
Remember that substances expand when they freeze, so leave some free space in bags and containers.
Freezing onions without heat treatment
- Pickling. Cut the onion into half rings and place in a plate. Fill with salt at a rate of 1 to 3. Done. Pack into containers and can be refrigerated.
Before cooking, then you need to rinse such onions in water so that the salt comes out.
- Use of foil. Mix the chopped vegetable with some herbs and butter (preferably butter). Put all the resulting mass on foil and squeeze it to the shape of a sausage so that excess air leaves. Put it in the refrigerator. When such a sausage freezes, take it out and cut it into pieces. Then put it back for storage. It will be a great addition to your main course.
Green onions can be preserved by freezing them. Chop it finely and dry it slightly so that it does not get lost in lumps later. We put it in packages or other containers. You can add some chopped parsley to it.
Correct defrosting
It is not enough to properly freeze your onions for storage. Then you also need to defrost it correctly.
- Defrosting in the refrigerator. We put it on the shelf from the freezer. Although it will defrost like this for a long time, all the aromas and substances remain with the vegetable.
- At home temperature. Just put the onion from the freezer on the table and wait for it to melt. True, here it will turn out to be watery, but it is quite possible to use it.
- In the microwave. Easy to defrost in five minutes. But if you do not keep track, then you can prepare the blank like that. Therefore, set the power of the stove to the minimum value and do not move away from it.
- In water. In this case, we put our product in cold water and wait. You should get an onion that tastes like a regular one.
- Sometimes you don't need to defrost the onion. For example, if you fried it.
The onions stored in the refrigerator can be used, as usual, in various stews, soups or minced meat.
