Preparing clematis for winter

The preparation of the flower for the winter period must begin in the fall. It is necessary to apply fertilizers enriched with phosphorus and potassium to the soil, remove old foliage.

Before the onset of the first frost, you need to have time to carry out preventive spraying of clematis. To do this, use a 1% solution of Bordeaux mixture or 2% solution of ferrous sulfate. For a more effective effect, it is recommended to use the drug "Fundazol". 20 g "Fundazol" per 10 liters of water is the optimal dosage for clematis treatment.

IMPORTANT! Spraying is carried out at a temperature not lower than + 5 ° C.

In autumn, the base of the flower is spud with a mixture of ash and sand. You need to use 250 g of ash per bucket of sand. Before the onset of stable frosts, the clematis branches are bent to the ground and covered with spruce branches.

When planting a plant, it must be remembered that the deeper the roots are from the surface, the less likely it is that frost will destroy them.

Winter thaws quite often cause damping out of clematis. To avoid this, peat or sawdust is poured over the spruce branches. These materials will absorb excess moisture. A film is laid on sawdust or peat in order to prevent soaking from precipitation.

From gusts of cold winds, clematis growing on the leeward side are provided with additional shelter in the form of protective frames made of slats and dense film.

ATTENTION! Covering flowers with a film, you need to leave an air gap in order to avoid damping off the branches.

Construction of a winter shelter for clematis

Hilling of clematis is carried out at a height of 15 cm from the soil. Low grades can simply be cut to this height and not erect additional shelters. Tall varieties are cut to a height of 50 cm. The layer of peat or other covering material should not exceed 25 cm. The film is thick, but not thick.

Clematis is able to withstand frosts down to -40 ° C, but only if there is a dense snow cover. But, given the possible thaws, it is still necessary to create a winter shelter.

The branches of clematis pressed to the ground are fixed with metal arcs, on which spruce branches are laid and sprinkled with peat or sawdust. From above, all this is covered with a protective film, which is fixed to the ground with improvised materials (stones, bricks).

With the arrival of the spring heat, the shelter is gradually dismantled. First, the film is removed, but the layer of peat and spruce branches is left for some time. They are removed only after the final leaving of the night frosts. Clematis shoots freed from arcs are gently lifted up.

Choosing the right clematis varieties will increase their chance of staying warm in winter. For the cold northern regions, early and mid-early varieties are suitable. In warm southern regions, species that bloom at any time can be used.
