  • destruction of unnecessary branches;
  • improvement of the bush configuration;
  • increasing its fertility.

Benefits of Autumn Pruning

This action will add several benefits to the vine holders. Namely:

  • Earlier ripening of the crop.
  • Improving the quality and size of berries.
  • Increase the resistance of bushes to frost.
  • Juices will climb the vines better, leading to an overall healthier vineyard.
Autumn is considered the best time for such care of the bushes, because you have time to prepare the vineyard well for the long winter.

General scheme for pruning grapes

Before proceeding with the pruning procedure, carry out preparatory actions with the bushes. Collect old berries and dead shoots from bushes. For one-year-old branches, cut off all the extra ones, leaving only the branches that are located at an angle of ninety degrees. You need to keep from three to seven of these "sleeves". Then we cut off the dried tops of annual branches, and lubricate the cuts with garden varnish.

Rules for pruning individual bushes

  • Remove shoots that have reached 15-20 cm. This must be done before the 20th of September.
  • Cut off shoots longer than 30 cm by 10%.
  • Mark a few good quality shoots up to 30 cm high and cut the lower branch, leaving the first five buds (eyes), this will create a replacement branch.
  • Form a fruit arrow by shortening tall shoots (up to 12 buds).

Circumcision production by calendar

  • Try before the end of the first week of September to remove the lateral shoots (on perennial branches) that have reached the second wire (60 cm from the soil). Cut off the top of the shoots that have grown to the first wire (30 cm from the soil), shorten them by 10-15%. We practically remove the lateral processes, leaving only two sheets.
  • In October, start forming the fruit link (replacement knot and fruit arrow). At the level of the second (60 cm) wire, select several shoots, cut off the lower one, leaving three buds. Cut the next shoot at a height of 5-7 buds, getting a fruit arrow.

Preparing grapes for the winter cold

After the onset of frost (up to minus 5), start preparing for the winter. Remove the grape trellises and anchor the plants to the ground. Use a film or tarp as a cover material and dig the scions into the soil. If it is not very cold in your winter, then cover the shoots with spruce branches and lay them with a board. The shrubs are much smaller after pruning, so you can easily dig them into the soil.

The main thing is to cover the grapes for the winter very carefully and not to damage them by strong twisting of the vine, which can lead to their breaking. If the bushes have been dug in with earth, then put pegs on this place, which will serve as an identification mark.

After taking such care of the vineyard, you will surely get a wonderful harvest.

Good luck!
