For autumn planting, large chives of winter garlic are often used, but this is irrational, since a small amount of them ripens in the bulb. It is recommended to use for planting bulbs, that is, garlic seeds. This method allows you to update the planting material, prevents the accumulation of pathogens in the soil.

Bulb harvesting time

Small bulbs ripen on the tops of the garlic arrows. It is necessary to leave the largest arrows on the beds during the growing season, and remove the rest.

As they grow, the arrows begin to curl up in a spiral shape. Then they are observed straightening and cracking of the film on the seed box, which serves as a signal for harvesting. During this period, you can cut off the arrows and dig up the garlic heads.

The arrows are tied in small bunches, which are hung in a well-ventilated room to dry. At the bottom, paper is laid out on which miniature onions are crumbled.

Before planting, the seed is kept for 12 hours in an infusion of 2 tbsp. l. wood ash mixed in a glass of water.

Benefits of using bulbs:

  • significant savings in planting material;
  • the possibility of reproduction of a rare variety;
  • reducing the risk of damage by pests and diseases;
  • obtaining quality heads of garlic.
The downside is the possibility of obtaining a negative result, since crops can freeze out.

Usually, the next year, small garlic bulbs, consisting of one clove, ripen from the seed. They are planted in the fall, resulting in a full-fledged large garlic. But often, under favorable conditions, already in the second season, it is possible to obtain commercial garlic bulbs from the bulbs.

Sowing work

For a garlic bed, a plot with fertile soil is selected. It should be borne in mind that it is undesirable to cultivate garlic after tomatoes or potatoes. The most suitable predecessors are legumes, pumpkin, various types of cabbage.

Algorithm of actions:

  • In the second half of September, the soil is dug up, adding fertilizers, if necessary: 6-8 kg of humus, a glass of ash and 12-16 g of potassium-phosphorus fertilizers per sq. meter.
  • Planting is carried out after 15-20 days, given that about 28-30 days should remain before frost.
  • Having formed the beds, they outline shallow grooves, leaving a distance of 20-30 cm between them.
  • When planting small seedlings, an interval of about 30 mm is observed. For coarse seed, this distance is slightly increased.
  • Sprinkle the seed with loose soil, and then watered.
On average, per 1 running meter, the consumption of miniature bulbs is about 35 pieces, and for a larger set - about 25 pieces.

To preserve moisture after sowing and ensure high safety from the cold, the surface of the beds is mulched with crushed dry peat, rotted compost or fallen leaves.

In winter, it is observed that there is enough snow on the garlic bed. If necessary, add it, which prevents freezing. In the spring, when sprouts already appear, the mulching material is removed, and the surface of the beds is loosened. It is necessary to regularly repeat the operation of loosening when a surface crust appears after rain or watering.

Crop care

When dry weather is established, garlic should be watered with settled water every 10 days.

The first feeding is performed after the development of the leaves. Organic matter is introduced using well-rotted compost or chicken manure solution. After the procedure, you need to water the young plants with water, washing off the remaining organic particles from the leaves to avoid burns. Repeat feeding after 2 weeks. It is forbidden to use fresh manure that provokes a variety of diseases

When using bulbs as a seed, competent adherence to agricultural technology allows get high-quality garlic that is not subject to a dangerous disease, preserves varietal specifications.
