How to make a garden bed
A stable box of the required size (for example, 0.8x3.5 m) is easy to make from boards, slate, thick plywood. Install it in a sunny place. In the following description, all calculations will be focused on the specified dimensions of the bed-box.
At the end of summer, a can (1 liter) of wood ash is sprinkled on the freed soil, and then the soil is loosened and white mustard is sown. By mid-September, the seedlings of green manure, when loosening, are embedded in the ground, after which 3 buckets of rotted manure are evenly spread over the surface. In October, you need to make a groove in the center of the ridge and lay comfrey and birch foliage in it. Enough plentifully watered organic matter with a solution of "Fitosporin. Cover the leaves with a layer of humus. Cover the entire ridge with a dense spunbond.
14-15 days before the planned planting of seedlings, the surface of the ridge is shed with warm water, and then again covered with a film. Such a measure will allow the soil to warm up well.
Planting cucumber seedlings
On the eve of planting, in the center of the ridge, you need to dig a trench with an average width of 60 cm. Its depth is equal to the bayonet of a shovel. The removed soil mixture is laid in a heap or in a wheelbarrow. Humus is poured into the bottom of the prepared trench, making a layer 5-7 cm high. Then you need to water from a watering can with slightly warmed water, into which, in accordance with the instructions, introduce "Baikal EM-1" or "Extrasol". Cover with foil overnight. The prepared bed should be watered just before planting.
Seedlings are planted along the central line of the trench, placing them necessarily in one row. Then the plants are sprinkled with the previously set aside soil mixture. 12 seedlings are placed on a 3.5 m long ridge. 100 g of superphosphate are scattered around the perimeter of the trench. Sprinkle with warm water, dissolving in it "Baikal EM-1" or "Extrasol". Straw cut mulch is placed on the surface with a layer of 70-80 mm (hay can be used). Spread humus evenly on top. Its thickness is 20 mm on average.
Growing features
After planting young cucumber seedlings, plastic or metal arcs are installed over the box, which are covered with foil.
A week later, pegs are installed along the ridge to a height of 1.7 m. A crossbar is fixed on top. Cucumber stalks are tied to it with a soft cord. Until the beginning of summer, the garden should be kept covered with spunbond.
Top dressing for the entire growing season, which usually lasts until the last decade of August, is performed three times with green fertilizer. To enhance efficiency, a handful of sifted wood ash is introduced into the infusion bucket. In the middle of June, as well as in the first days of July, the irrigation of the lower foliage and the mulching layer is practiced with a solution of "Fitosporin". Watering cucumbers at the root is rarely carried out.
The second version of the bed-box
When using a square box, you can plant cucumber seedlings closer to the beginning of July. The seeds are sown in mid-June. In this case, the support is installed in the form of a wigwam.
If in August, with the onset of cool weather, a non-woven fabric is attached to a support, then it will be possible to collect fresh crunchy greens by the end of September.
The advantages of growing cucumbers in box ridges
There are 5 main advantages of arranging a cucumber bed in a box:
- Fewer seedlings are required to grow than on a regular bed.
- A small area is required for the box.
- Plants, due to the release of heat due to over-heating of the straw and the formation of a strong viable root system, develop strong and healthy.
- The mulch layer retains moisture well, prevents the germination of weeds, and preserves the looseness of the surface layer of the soil.
- The use of microbiological preparations prevents the development of diseases and the appearance of pests.
It is not difficult to grow high-quality delicious cucumbers in stationary box beds. When using this technology, it will be possible to achieve stable, abundant fruiting.
