Is boric acid safe?
This chemical compound has no effect on humans: you will not find irritation or burns on the skin of your hands. Moreover, even small children and pets will be out of danger, and this is an important advantage of this method. Previously, the substance was used as a disinfectant, but other means came to replace it. Despite the low hazard level, care and attention should be taken when handling boric acid.
Children under 3 years old are not allowed to the chemical, pregnant and lactating women, people with allergic reactions and kidney disease should also avoid using boric acid.
To eliminate the risk, it is better to protect children and animals from boric acid, although nothing terrible will happen when pets come into contact with the chemical. In the worst case, it will cause allergies, and if ingested, it will lead to headaches, nausea and vomiting.
Thus, the substance under study is one of the safest insect control agents, which explains its widespread use.
Acid properties and its effect on cockroaches
Boric acid is a crystalline powder that is poorly soluble in water and does not have a specific odor. White particles of the substance resemble scales, the melting point is 170 degrees. This chemical is mined in the Middle East and the Mediterranean.
The acid can be purchased in alcoholic solution, aqueous solution, or in powder form. A 70% alcohol solution is called boric alcohol, it has a pungent odor, and this substance is not the best option for fighting insects. Due to the smell of boric alcohol, cockroaches do not fit the bait, and its effectiveness is minimized. The powder is better suited, since insects do not notice it, carry it on their paws, and then eat it.
Boric acid is a very poisonous substance for pests. Once in the cockroach's body, the chemical has a destructive effect on its nervous system and destroys the nerve endings. When a sufficient amount of poison accumulates in the body, the Prussians die from suffocation provoked by paralysis.
You do not need to buy a lot of boric powder: 2-3 mg is enough for poisoning 1 cockroach. Thus, a sachet containing 10 g will kill about 1000 pests. Of course, some of the chemical will remain in place and not be involved in the poisoning. To increase the effectiveness of the substance, it is customary to create baits.
We design baits
The substance must be placed in areas where insects live. Such places include:
- holes along the skirting boards;
- space under furniture;
- under the sink and near the bathroom.
The bathroom is an attractive place for the Prussians. High humidity, darkness, tranquility are necessary components for the comfort of cockroaches, which are only in this room. In bathrooms, powder is scattered into small piles, like flour or sugar, so that pests will pay attention to them. Unfortunately, acid is not able to fight insect eggs.
It is customary to poison cockroaches in several ways:
- using a homogeneous powder;
- creation of baits;
- the use of solutions.
Preparing a boric acid solution
Liquid poison is the easiest way to control pests. For its preparation, several sachets of powder are placed in the water to obtain a mixture of high concentration. This solution is placed in lids or saucers, placed in distant corners of the kitchen and under furniture.
Before using the mixture, insects are deprived of access to another liquid, for this, the following is carried out:
- thoroughly wipe the sink;
- tightly close the taps;
- remove wet wipes and sponges;
- pots with plants are rearranged in other rooms, their soil contains the moisture necessary for cockroaches.
Before cooking, put on gloves and a mask, avoid contact with the skin and remember that the solution will not work if water gets into the cockroach's body after it.
We process the apartment
Preparing the premises for the procedure for getting rid of cockroaches includes 3 stages:
- preparation of the kitchen and bathroom;
- preparation of the poison;
- distribution of the mixture throughout the apartment.
It is very important to clean the apartment before using the poison, since the effectiveness is reduced to zero if the insects eat or drink anything after absorbing the poisonous mixture. You will understand that the poison acted to change the behavior of the Prussians: they will go out during the day, become slower, and die in a few days.
