Good afternoon, my reader. The first mentions of bedbugs living in human dwellings are found in ancient Greek written sources as early as 400 BC. For such a long period of coexistence with this type of parasite, man has used many means and methods, both folk and chemical. Given the high viability of bedbugs, the rate of their reproduction, the fight against them should be started immediately after detection. Otherwise, residents of houses and apartments will feel the activity of unwanted neighbors soon after the latter enter the premises.

The appearance and habits of bed bugs

The bed bug is an insect with a flattened, wide body, the length of which, depending on saturation, can reach 8.5 mm. A well-fed bug has a more rounded body with a uniform dark color. Parasites are wingless and do not have the ability to move by jumping. Insects take root well in any premises, regardless of their sanitary condition, parasitizing on humans, warm-blooded animals and birds.

This blood-sucking insect is nocturnal, and during the day it hides in the immediate vicinity of a food source, namely, from a sleeping person. The favorite habitats of bedbugs are beds, folds of clothes, covers, cracks in the floor and parquet, household appliances and other hard-to-reach places. Signs of presence in the room are the remains of chitinous skins and excrement in the habitat.

At night, bedbugs leave the shelter in search of food. Parasites feed exclusively on blood, sucking it out on open areas of the body. Adults consume blood in quantities that are twice their own weight. Insects need blood at all stages of development, including fast-growing larvae.

The harm caused to humans by bug bites

There is no reliable information about bedbugs as carriers of dangerous diseases in the sources. However, a person experiences the greatest harm from the bites of these insects, depriving him of normal sleep and quality of life in general, and in some cases getting an allergic reaction. In addition, the external manifestations of the effects of bedbugs in the form of redness of the bite site, pain, itching also cause discomfort and nervousness. Combing bite marks can lead to infection and more serious consequences.

Pest control chemicals

The fight against the unwanted neighborhood of bedbugs by chemical methods is made difficult by the extreme unpretentiousness of the latter and their ability to hide in the most secluded places.

In addition, bed bugs are extremely resistant to chemicals used to combat them. Resistance to this or that drug is developed in bedbugs, starting from the second generation. For this reason, chemical agents for the destruction of bedbugs must be constantly alternated. The basic principle of the work of chemicals against bedbugs is the nerve effect on the insect's body. The ingestion of the active substance of the drug on the individual immobilizes, and subsequently leads to its death.

Temperature method of dealing with bedbugs

The biological feature of insects is their sensitivity to indoor air temperature. So, exposure to high temperatures (more than +45 degrees Celsius) leads to the instant death of bedbugs and their eggs.

Lowering the temperature to -5 degrees and below will bring insects into a state of suspended animation.

Folk remedies and methods for destroying bedbugs

For a long time "neighborhood" with bed bugs, many different means and methods have been invented to get rid of them.

The action of some is based on the aforementioned thermal method: pieces of furniture and clothing were taken out in the cold or treated with hot steam and boiling water.

Other folk remedies were aimed at scaring off bedbugs with odorous plants and substances: wormwood, tansy, wild rosemary, as well as gasoline, turpentine, vinegar, etc.

Whatever means are used in the fight against bedbugs, the principles of their destruction should be efficiency and speed.
