Basic methods of grafting raspberry bushes

Today, gardeners use several methods of vegetative propagation of raspberries:

  • cuttings - root or green;
  • offspring - lignified or green.
The most common and convenient way is to grow seedlings from root cuttings.

Every year in August on the surface horizontal roots of raspberries appear a large the number of buds, which in September turn into small (about 5 cm tall) shoots with rudiments foliage. The next spring, after the establishment of warm weather, they begin active growth and hatch from the ground. By the end of summer, such shoots form their own root suckers. The offspring of one year do not develop at the same rate and appear on the surface at different times, because the buds from which they grew are located at different depths.

You can increase the growth rate of seedlings and get a stronger and healthier material if you cover them with film. This will protect the sprouts from the vagaries of the weather and will give the gardener the opportunity to independently control the temperature and level of moisture in the air and soil.

Algorithm for propagation of raspberries by cuttings

The traditional and well-established method of propagation of raspberries is by cuttings in the autumn months. Just separate the root suckers from the mother bush and use them as ready-made planting material. Try to choose the strongest, and it is better to cut the weakest at the very base to save the strength of the mother plant. Saplings with a well-developed rhizome lobe and a size of at least 7 mm are considered suitable for transplantation.

Reproduction by green cuttings is also often used. In this case, the weak and late hatching shoots from the soil are not destroyed, but are carefully dug out with preservation earthen coma and transplanted separately into the ground or for temporary storage in bags filled with moistened sand from polyethylene.

Saplings must be shaded from the bright sun and watered periodically. By the fall, they will make strong shoots that can be planted in a permanent place, and the next year they will bring their first harvest.

The best time for grafting

The optimal time for the procedure is mid-October. Separate several horizontal roots located at the surface from the mother bush and cut into cuttings, each of which should be at least 7 cm long and 4 mm wide. Then tie them in bunches, put them in a wooden box and cover them with wet sawdust or soil.

Cover the box with plastic on top and place it in a cellar or refrigerator at a temperature of about plus 4 degrees. In early May, plant the cuttings in a greenhouse with light, nutritious soil.
