Varieties of domestic palms

There are two varieties of the plant - feathery and fan-shaped. They got their name for the shape of the leaves.

The following types of decorative palms are grown at home.

  • Date. The most frequent representative in the homes of compatriots. Almost everyone attempted to grow a young plant from a date seed. But at home, it is realistic to grow the Robelen date palm, the fruits of which are not edible. The plant grows up to 2 m, has a lush crown with curved leaves, and its fruits are inedible.

  • Dracaena. With the help of this variety of palm trees, they have been greening rooms for more than a decade. The plant develops well at home, propagates by cuttings. The maximum height of the tree is 2 m, the leaves are collected in bunches and have a variety of colors - from light shades of green to dark. Striped foliage is not uncommon.
  • Areca. Also, it does not grow over 2 m, but the length of the feathery leaves reaches a meter. It has a flexible trunk, the leaves are collected in a bunch.
  • Trachikarpus. Perfectly adapted to the home environment. The trunk is similar to a bottle, rather large leaves are fanned out. It blooms with light flowers that give a pleasant aroma.
  • Kariota. It grows very quickly, life expectancy is 20 years. Wide triangular leaves are torn off at the edges.
  • Hovey Foster. Undemanding to care, disease resistant. Pests such as spider mites and mealy worms bypass her. Leaves are leathery, deep dark green.
  • Rapis. Tolerates periods without watering, but loves light. Direct sunlight leaves burns on the leaves. It is a bush with fan-shaped leaves.
  • Hamedorea. It easily tolerates drought and does not need good lighting. It has delicate foliage, which is often attacked by pests.

Necessary conditions for development

The natural habitat for palm trees is the tropics and subtropics. In the room where the palm tree is grown, it is necessary to create a warm and humid microclimate.

The plant can be grown from seeds that are available in specialized stores, but it can take a decade for them to reach full growth. Grown young or adult trees can be purchased in the store and then all that remains is to provide them with the necessary care.

The main conditions for the location of the palm tree in the room are:

  • a sufficient amount of free space around;
  • lack of other plants nearby.

Caring for a palm tree at home

The plant must be frequently and regularly sprayed with a spray bottle. This procedure is just as important as watering. In summer, spraying is carried out 3 times a week, in winter, with the heating on, every day. The spray water should be warm. Watering should be moderate so that the soil remains moist, but does not turn into a soggy swamp. In winter, watering is carried out 3 times a week. For it, exclusively settled water is used.

Lighting should be bright, but diffuse. Avoid direct sunlight. Trees are afraid of drafts and roots must be protected from the cold.

Young trees need to be transplanted annually in a larger container. After transplanting, there is no need to use top dressing for 6 months.

When growing a palm tree, attention should be paid not only to physical care, but also to monitor the psychological atmosphere in the house. When caring for a plant, you can talk to it or hum. A tree growing in a favorable environment will certainly delight its owner with extraordinary beauty.
