Good afternoon, my reader. The hardy and picky flower of mirabilis has large, rather bright and very beautiful flowers that open in the evening and fill the air with their unique aroma all night long. The colors of the buds are very diverse and can be of different tones even on the same bush. You can grow on the site by seeds or by transplanting tubers.

Varieties of mirabilis

Mirabilis, known as the night beauty, is a tall plant with straight shoots in large numbers, on which flowers bloom.

Varieties have been bred that can satisfy any idea in decorating a site:

  • tall;
  • undersized;
  • terry;
  • multi-flowered.

Various colors distinguish not only individual flowers, but can also appear in one bud. Flowers can be striped, colored in several iridescent shades, or have a transition from dark to white.

They are all grown the same using tubers and seeds.

Growing from seeds

Before sowing, the seeds are soaked in warm water for 24 hours. Sowing is carried out at the end of March. The seeds are planted in moist soil to a depth of half a centimeter and watered with warm water. The container with the planting material is covered with glass or transparent film and kept in a warm, bright place.

The first shoots will appear in 14 days, after which the film is removed and the pot is placed on the windowsill. As soon as the sprouts release real leaves, they are transplanted into separate containers, for example, plastic cups. The main thing during this period is to ensure that the soil is constantly moist.

Planting in open ground is carried out after a stable onset of warm weather in well-moistened soil. It is better to choose a cloudy day.

Growing from tubers

The tubers can be purchased at the flower shop and stored in the refrigerator on the vegetable shelf until planting. They are planted in late April or mid-May, when the soil warms up enough to a depth of 15 cm.

The planted tubers, which have large shoots, are covered overnight with cut plastic bottles, glass jars or non-woven fabric. Complete freedom, without shelter, is given to the plant as soon as the periods of night frost are over.

Long and weak shoots are pinched, leaving no more than 10 cm to stimulate the growth of new ones.

Conditions for landing mirabilis

The plant is not picky about the composition of the soil. The only thing that does not suit the flower is too acidic soil. The site should be well lit, since in the shade the mirabilis stretches in length and practically does not bloom.

It is better to choose a spacious plot, since a night beauty can outlive neighboring plants. A flower planted by the fence will turn it into a hedge.

Any kind of mirabilis can be trimmed, pinched and shaped into the desired shape. The cut plant only enhances its flowering.

Mirabilis care

Watering is carried out once every three days. On very hot days, you can spray the entire flower with water. Fertilizers are applied once a month and only organic.

After the first autumn frosts, all plant stems are cut, leaving no more than 10 cm from the surface. After the cut shoots have dried completely, the roots of mirabilis are dug out of the soil, dried and stored in containers with sand or dry sawdust in basements and cellars. The main thing is that the temperature does not fall below + 5 ° C.

In the southern regions, the night beauty does not need to be dug out of the soil. It is enough to trim the stems and cover the tubers with a layer of mulch.
