It is known that history has no subjunctive mood, and speculating on what would have happened if it was an extremely thankless and tedious business. However, getting acquainted with individual moments of history, you understand how thin the ice sometimes was between what happened and how it could have happened. So the German aircraft technicians of the 1930s were ahead of their time, starting the development of an aircraft that could put a fat point in the upcoming air war even before it began.

The Third Reich was the state that developed a phenomenal amount of experimental weapons. of all sorts and stripes, from pistols to guard the Fuhrer, ending with supertanks, superguns and the same by airplanes. The Germans were even more interested in the latter than in artillery pieces. The Horten Ho IX was ahead of its time, becoming the world's first jet-powered flying wing aircraft and one of the first stealth aircraft.

The innovative glider was developed by German aircraft designers, brothers Walter and Reimar Horten. They created their first project of a new aircraft back in 1931. In 1936, the Hortens entered the service of the Luftwaffe, where they continued their scientific and technical research under the patronage of the state. By 1939, they had become phenomenally famous for their flying wing experiments, which literally swept Germany into an airplane fever.

The Hortens continued their experiments after the outbreak of the war. Moreover, the Luftwaffe showed great interest in a promising jet machine that could be used as a reconnaissance and bomber. And therefore, the project continued to be financed even when everything was not at all good for Germany on the eastern front. The idea of the No-229 jet plane was one of the few types of Germany's miracle weapons, which the Germans did not abandon until the very end of the war.

As a result, in 1944, a prototype appeared that was able to fully satisfy the command of the Luftwaffe. They wanted to produce 20 aircraft as a trial batch. The aircraft was propelled by two Jumo-004B power plants and had dimensions of 7.2x16.8x2.6 meters. The aircraft crew consisted of only one pilot. The maximum speed was striving for 1 thousand km / h, as well as the maximum flight range was striving for 1 thousand km. The practical flight ceiling reached 16 km.

Everything ended for the development of the Horten brothers on April 14, 1945. The Friedrichrode plant took over the 8th Corps of the US 3rd Army. It was there that the latest aircraft were to be assembled. Almost all of them were destroyed by the Germans themselves, except for one. Disassembled, the car was removed from Germany and taken to the United States for study. In 2015, the aircraft was restored and now it is a museum piece.
