Good afternoon, my reader. In the unheated rooms of the summer cottage, for the winter, they often leave everything that is not needed in the city, but it may come in handy next year. Among these things are televisions. Can they be left - or is it better to take them back to the city?

Storage temperature for LCD TV
Modern (i.e. less than 15 years old) TV models are often equipped with an LCD screen. And for them, negative temperatures can cause breakdown. The fact is that most monitors are not designed for cooling below zero. Some models can withstand temperatures down to -15 -20 ºC, but no more than a few hours.
The most common problem here is matrix damage. Under the influence of frost, the pixels become unusable and stop displaying information.
However, even here there are chances to keep the device. The main thing is not to turn on the TV before the onset of cold weather. There is less damage to the LCD monitor when it is idle than when it is used in extremely low temperatures.
Plasma TV storage temperature
Plasma displays are much more reliable. They are more tolerant of storage conditions and, if not included at all throughout the winter, will tolerate refrigeration to any temperature without damage. Only the residents of Oymyakon may have problems: no household appliances are designed for extreme winter temperatures in a harsh continental climate. However, there are also chances that the "plasma" will survive until spring.
Operating and storage modes of TVs
The data is indicated for models disassembled and prepared for work. In the original packaging, the LCD monitor will withstand up to -20 for 1-3 days.
If you are in doubt about whether the TV will withstand storage in the cold, read the instructions. The manufacturer indicates there the exact data for each model. However, they usually do not exceed the data given above.
How to use TVs during the cold season
If you decide to leave the TV in an unheated room, remember the following:
- At negative temperatures, it is highly undesirable to turn it on.
- If you brought the device into a warm room from frost, unpack it and let it warm up for at least 2-3 hours. During this time, the condensation formed inside the device will dry out and evaporate, and you will not need to worry about a possible short circuit.
IMPORTANT: It is categorically impossible to turn on the old TVs brought into the house from the frost until they are warmed up! The fact is that the operation of a cathode-ray tube requires a high voltage (even with a relatively small current strength), and a short circuit will be fatal not only for the technique, but also for the owner if he touches the non-insulated part device.
Can I leave the TV in the country in winter?
If you brought a TV set to your dacha in the summer to watch TV programs in your free time, you can leave it there for the winter. But you need to consider the possible risks:
- Frost damage. Modern technology is thermophilic and will not survive extremely low temperatures.
- Dust damage. If you do not take care of the device and do not wipe it from dust and dirt, a short circuit is possible due to particles of moisture and debris that have got inside under the cover.
- Theft. Unfortunately, summer cottages, which were empty for the winter, are a favorite subject for criminal actions of those who do not comply with the law. Leaving the TV there runs the risk that it will be stolen by the spring.
If you have to leave the equipment at the dacha, then it is better to do it with TVs with old CRT monitors. There are two reasons:
- It is unlikely that thieves will shame on her. Now, not only the Soviet Rubin, but even some Hi-Black Trinitron, a reason for the pride and envy of neighbors in the 90s, is not needed for nothing. And what cannot be sold is not stolen.
- This technique includes the expression: "Oak, but reliable." CRTs have a lot less things to break compared to plasma and LCD screens.
And in any case: when leaving the cottage - unplug the TV from the network and cover with a cloth (not with a film - moisture will condense under it). It's enough.
