Good afternoon, my reader. With the onset of autumn, a large number of all kinds of twists appear in the cellar or basement, as well as supplies of potatoes, carrots, beets and other vegetables for the winter. The main problem faced by cellar owners is condensation. Constant dampness leads to the spread of fungus and mold, which can lead to damage to all workpieces. Therefore, at the very first signs of condensation in the cellar, measures must be taken, otherwise the loss of the crop will be inevitable.

There are several procedures to help you get rid of or prevent condensation:
- Drying the cellar.
- Ceiling insulation.
- Floor waterproofing.
- Use of absorbent materials.
- Organization of proper ventilation.
Drying the cellar is mandatory, since it is impossible to store blanks and carry out any work in a room with high humidity.
- Brazier helps to get rid of dampness. It is used in a room that is pre-ventilated for 2-3 days. Place the apparatus on the floor, light the fire and use the brazier until the humidity is normal. A prerequisite for efficient operation of the device is the presence of ventilation in the room.
- Dehumidifiers not only reduce humidity, but also maintain it at the required level. This unit is sold at hardware stores. The undoubted advantages of the dehumidifier include air cooling and collection of liquid in a special compartment.
- Home heater or wind blower, which can be purchased at an electronics store, is installed in the basement for a long time. A prerequisite for moisture removal is the presence of ventilation in the room.
To insulate the ceiling, it is best to use 3-5 cm thick foam.
- Mark the ceiling.
- Fasten the foam boards with plastic mushrooms (at the rate of 5 pieces per board).
- Be sure to install a vapor barrier on top between the film and the foam plates.
Please note that thermal insulation is not done on wood ceilings!
Floor waterproofing is carried out using roofing material.
- Poor waterproofing is indicated by wet areas on the basement floor, water on the walls. First, dry the room well.
- The top layer of soil (10-15 cm) must be removed. Tamp the earth well.
- Put a layer of clay on top. Seal it.
- Place a layer of sand and gravel (10 cm) on the clay.
- Concrete the floor and let it dry.
- Lay roofing material on top (overlap).
- Use a gas burner to remove the seams between the sheets.
- Lay extruded polystyrene foam (3 cm) on roofing material.
- Place a reinforcing mesh on top and secure the structure with a concrete screed.
Such manipulations are best carried out at the stage of building a basement, but it is also possible in an already operated room.
Absorbent materials are varied and absorb excess moisture from the air.
- Buckets with slaked lime place in the corners of the basement.
- Preheat 3-4 clay brick and place them on the floor in the cellar. Instead of bricks, you can use smouldering coals, laid out in buckets and placed in the corners of the room.
- Containers with ash and salt place around the perimeter of the basement. As soon as they get wet, you need to replace the contents.
- The cheapest way is to use paper and sawdust as absorbents. Their disadvantage is fragility, so materials will have to be changed often.
Please note that hygroscopic materials can be used if the humidity in the basement is not too high.
Ventilation can be made both natural and forced.
Natural ventilation:
- Take two pipes (over 13 cm in diameter).
- Place one pipe horizontally to the floor and lead it out through the basement foundation.
- Install the second pipe vertically in the opposite part of the cellar and take it out to the roof. It will serve as a hood.
Forced ventilation:
- Install the pipes horizontally and vertically (as described above).
- Place the fan in the horizontal pipe so that it drives the air into the room, and through the vertical pipe the air should go out.
- You can make automatic or mechanical ventilation.
All described procedures are effective and are actively used by the owners of the basements. Your job is to find what works best for your space.
