First cut
The first pruning is done in early spring after the snow melts. At this time, the gardener:
- feeds plants growing on poor soil;
- carries out sanitary pruning, carefully removing all diseased, damaged or attacked by pests shoots;
- treats plants with antifungal and antibacterial agents (copper or iron vitriol, bactericidal drugs, etc.);
- removes weeds under raspberry roots.
The first pruning is done when buds begin to form on the bush.
Second cut
It is held in the fall, when the harvest has already been harvested, but there is still time before the cold weather.
The algorithm of work here is as follows:
- All weak shoots are cut out, leaving only 6-8 large and healthy ones per bush.
- The stem is cut from above to a length of 10-15 cm, or until 6-8 healthy buds remain, not affected by pests.
IMPORTANT: You need to work with sharp scissors or sharpened pruning shears, which does not crush the stems, but cuts them cleanly. The blades should be treated with alcohol or chlorine solution or ignited in an open flame so as not to introduce infection into the sections.
Cutting by stages
In order for the bush to bear fruit more abundantly and as long as possible, the following scheme is used:
- Large shoots are cut from above by 10-15 cm.
- Half of the small ones are cut in half.
- The remaining half of the little things are cut out at the root, leaving nothing.
IMPORTANT: This scheme is used for remontant raspberries, which give two crops. If you want the harvest to be one, but late, - pruning is carried out alone: in the fall - and right at the root. Then next season the raspberry tree will recover just in time for late summer and will give one harvest - but already at the end of August - September.
Autumn pruning options for remontant raspberries
If it is planned that remontant raspberries will give two harvests per season (albeit less abundant than conventional varieties), then autumn pruning is extremely necessary. At this time, two-year-old shoots are cut (they differ in the dark color of the bark). After that, cleaning is carried out: sanitary pruning of young shoots is carried out (sick and branches affected by pests), the earth is cleared of leaves, and the raspberry itself is preparing for wintering under hiding place.
If you need one, but powerful and late harvest, the raspberry is cut clean. Only 5-7 cm stumps are left with dormant buds, which next spring will give abundant young shoots, by August-September giving an abundance of autumn raspberries. If this is not done, then in winter massive losses of stems are possible, and the bush itself can degenerate from a remontant into an ordinary raspberry tree.
