Sowing seeds
Sowing dates will depend on what species the selected petunia belongs to; the characteristics of growing from seeds may differ. It is recommended to sow the main types of flower for seedlings in March, but it will take more time for the development of ampelous flowers, they begin to sow it in January.
When choosing a planting capacity, preference should be given to plastic cups and peat tablets. For ampelous species, you can immediately use a hanging planter.
The soil should be prepared in advance, mixed in equal parts:
- garden land;
- sand;
- peat;
- humus.
Before use, the soil for disinfection is spilled with a weak solution of potassium permanganate.
It is convenient to sow the seeds in a large plastic container, cut into 2 halves. One half of the container is filled to the middle with prepared soil, which is well watered. When the moisture is completely absorbed, spread the seeds evenly, for convenience, you can use a toothpick or tweezers. From above, the container is covered with plastic wrap or a piece of glass.
A homemade greenhouse is left in a warm room; it can take up to 10 days before the first shoots appear. Every day the container is slightly opened for airing.
Seedling care
When shoots appear, the container is transferred to a room with good lighting. If possible, artificial lighting can be provided around the clock.
Watering the seedlings is carried out as the soil dries up. The sprouts are very delicate, it is recommended to moisten them carefully using a medical syringe, the tip of which is deepened into the ground. The grown seedlings can be watered using a spray bottle.
When up to 5 true leaves appear on the sprouts, the seedlings must be dived, transplanted into separate cups or another container of larger volume. If the seeds were sown immediately in separate small containers, then picking is not needed.
When transplanting, the cups are only half filled with soil mixture. As the seedlings grow, they gradually fill up the soil in small portions. When transferring grown seedlings to a permanent place, so as not to damage the root system, they carry out the transshipment of the plant along with an earthen lump.
When the shoots after transplantation take root and take root, remove their upper part with leaves so that the flower sprouts lateral shoots. The sprouts that have been pinched off can be rooted by placing them in a separate container with soil. After pinching, the seedlings are fed with complex fertilizer. In order for the petunia to bloom magnificently, this procedure can be carried out several times.
If peat tablets were used for sowing seeds, then when the sprout is transplanted to a permanent place, the mesh is removed from the peat ball. Further care is the same as when sowing seedlings in plastic containers. When planting flowers in a permanent place, a distance of at least 20 cm must be left between the bushes.
