Description of pelargonium
The plant belongs to the category of perennials from the Geranium family. In total, there are more than 300 varieties that differ in appearance. Also, flowers have a specific smell, which depends on the species. The most common aromas are:
- Muscat.
- Citrus.
- Chocolate.
The shoots of the plant are straight or branched, and the foliage can be either simple or finger-dissected. Inflorescences resemble umbrellas and are small and multi-flowered. The color of the petals is determined by the type of plant. Therefore, on sale you can find one- and two-colored plants with a double and smooth surface of the petals. The shade of the buds is represented by a wide color palette.
As a result of flowering on pelargonium, small fruit-boxes with sepals appear. The opening of the fruits occurs like a bird's beak, which allows the plant to be attributed to the Geranium family.
But geranium and pelargonium are different species from the same family. The first is cold-resistant and able to grow in the wild, and the second flower likes a warm climate, so it is often kept inside the dwelling.
For a flower to grow beautiful and healthy, it is important to provide it with proper care. It looks simple enough and doesn't require much effort.
Pelargonium care for beginners
Since pelargonium is a light-loving flower, it is impractical to grow it in partial shade. In the event of a lack of lighting, the shrub will cease to form inflorescences and lose its attractive appearance. In addition, in dark conditions, the growth and development of the flower is suspended, and the foliage begins to wilt.
When choosing a place to install a container with a flower, you should give preference to areas with bright diffused light. However, an overabundance of sunlight is dangerous for above-ground elements and can provoke burns.
Being a heat-loving flower, pelargonium needs to maintain a temperature regime within + 18... 25 ° C. During rest, the temperature is reduced to + 15... + 12 ° C. If there is no opportunity to grow shrubs in such conditions, you will need to take care of an additional light source.
Since African countries are considered the homeland of pelargonium, it does not need to be watered abundantly. An excess of moisture contributes to the drooping of the leaves. Therefore, irrigation of the soil in a pot or garden is carried out as the surface dries up.
At the stage of active development (from spring months to autumn), the plant is fed with liquid formulations every 14 days. When feeding, you should distribute the preparations in a slightly moistened substrate. Any composition for ornamental plants with a high concentration of potassium and phosphorus is used as fertilizer.
