The technique of planting grapes in autumn practically does not differ from the spring one. However, both of them remain the first and most important stage in the cultivation of this popular crop. The future of your vineyard largely depends on how cleverly your vineyard is planted.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that the first months of a bush's development determine its future strength and durability. How quickly his vine begins to develop, how quickly fruiting will come and what the harvest will be - all this is directly related to the quality of the planting process.

And although there is no particular difference in the technique of autumn and spring planting, planting grapes in autumn is more common.

Pros of autumn planting

Work on planting grape seedlings begins in October and continues until the first light frosts. Landing during this period has undeniable advantages. The earth retains the heat that has accumulated during the warm time, and the roots of the seedlings receive it at the entire depth of their location.

Correct planting provides the seedlings with good rooting. Due to this, young plants enter the growing season together with the arrival of spring - their friendly growth begins.

Benefits of autumn planting:

  • the seedlings have a period of organic dormancy;
  • it is easier for them to transfer transportation;
  • plants "do not notice" the change in location;
  • a higher percentage of survival in a new place than with a spring planting;
  • in the fall, there is much more to choose from.
One of the main conditions, which also affects the survival rate of seedlings and the future high yield, is the preparation of a pit for planting plants.

If someone thinks that it is enough to simply make a depression of a certain size, place a seedling in it, cover it with earth and water, then he is mistaken. And from the point of view of agricultural technology, this is a gross mistake.

How to prepare a pit for grape seedlings

Arrangement of the pit will require some physical effort and time. But it must be prepared in accordance with all the rules. This will provide the seedlings in the first two years with the conditions for the formation of a powerful root system, which is absolutely necessary for the growth of strong and highly productive grape bushes.

The pit dimensions are standard: 80 cm deep, 70 to 80 cm wide. When choosing land, do not pile it up. The most fertile top layer, about 1/3 of the removed soil, must be placed on one side, the bottom layer on the other.

Practical advice: if you make a mark on the handle of the shovel, you will not have to constantly use a tape measure to measure the parameters of the pit.

After that, ash, humus and fertilizers are added to the soil of the upper layer in the right proportions. When choosing fertilizers, you need to take into account their composition. Phosphorus and potassium are required.

Don't neglect this. The nutrients in the planting pit will provide the grapes with active growth and development for two or even three years - until the beginning of full fruiting.

The filled mixture should be at least 50 cm in height to the top of the pit. Then the ground needs to be watered. If after that it has significantly subsided, fill up, so that its level is not lower than half a meter from the edge of the hole.

Now you can leave the prepared hole for a couple of weeks so that the earth in it sags well. Then, when planting, the seedling will not be lower after tamping than required by agricultural technology.

Experience shows that if all the requirements are met, your seedlings will take root, actively grow, and in 3-4 years it will be possible to harvest a good grape harvest. Illustration for this article is used under a standard license © ofazende.com

We plant correctly

It is necessary to keep the seedlings in water for about 15-20 hours. Then cut off all damaged roots on them, and those that grow on the upper nodes.

You need to drive a peg into the hole, a seedling will be tied to it after planting. Then fill up the remaining fertile soil of the top layer.

The soil of the lower layer is mixed with coarse sand or fine gravel and filled into the pit. Then you need to spud the seedling 30 centimeters up.

Since he has to survive the winter, he must immediately take care of the shelter. To do this, you can use a cut plastic 5-liter flask - cover the seedling with it.

The final stage is watering with 3 buckets of water.

Experience shows that if all the requirements are met, your seedlings will take root, actively grow, and in 3-4 years it will be possible to harvest a good grape harvest.
